Cottage in the heart of Périgord near Brantôme, Angoulême, Périgueux

10/10 Excellent
"We had a wonderful week staying in this beautiful cottage in the heart of the Périgord with good friends. The cottage has so much French charm and character. It is rustic, warm and homely, with a beautiful, natural feel throughout. It genuinely feels like staying in a traditional French family home, with lots of character and little touches that make it feel very special. The pool was clean and lovely, and the children absolutely loved spending time in it every day. There were plenty of sun loungers, making it easy to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Our hosts were fantastic. They met us when we arrived, despite our very late arrival after a long journey, and had thoughtfully left ice creams in the freezer along with wine and beer in the fridge – such a lovely welcome!Communication was excellent throughout. They were incredibly friendly, approachable and knowledgeable about the local area, giving us great information about events, supermarkets, shops and places to visit. Although they live next door, they gave us complete privacy and were always available if we needed anything. We gave 4 stars purely because the property is very rustic and rural. If you are looking for a modern, five-star, immaculate property, this may not be for you. However, if you want a peaceful, authentic French experience in a warm, calming home full of character, then this is absolutely the place. We loved our stay and would happily return. Highly recommended!"

"This is the best place that I have ever stayed in. It’s truly magnificent. Historic, luxurious, serene and romantic. The staff were impeccable. The food was stunning. The grounds and amenities are second to none. Get a room in the main chateau if you can, they are absolutely fabulous. I cannot say enough great things about this property."

Hôtel du Commerce

Hôtel du Commerce

10/10 Excellent
"This hotel is lovely. It was clean throughout, the pool was open and available, parking outside at the front was plentiful and the flower troughs along the front were beautiful. Communication with Stephane was easy and he offered to allow us access before 6pm, which we didn’t take advantage of in the end. His phone number is clearly visible on the front door if the hotel is unmanned. The food in the restaurant was top quality and the service was excellent. We would have no reservation in recommending this hotel to others."

Hôtel Restaurant Le Jardin des chouchoux Brantôme

Hôtel Restaurant Le Jardin des chouchoux Brantôme

10/10 Excellent
"Just a one-night stay, but after one night, we wanted to stay a week. The personnel were not just helpful, they were downright AWESOME. Above and beyond. We came in around lunchtime and opted to eat on property. Best decision we could’ve made. The small staff made the most of their culinary skill. The lunch was perfect. Homemade jams and other special touches made it so. Seriously perfect. When we are in town for dinner and had a less-than-subpar experience, we remarked, almost in unison, “We should’ve eaten on property.” The room was a standalone bungalow up a short path. The configuration of the property was quirky in all the right ways. There is a small outdoor pool (which we knew was there at booking but didn’t use), and the room was very comfortable. Bed linens were just right and the bathroom was ample. Each room has a hard key and a safe key. Took a little to get it right, but no issues. If you need to stock up on snacks, you’re about a hundred meters from the Aldi. We had indicated we’d have breakfast, and despite getting up earlier than anticipated and wanting to hit the road, we stayed for one last taste of the incredible service and hospitality here. If you like cookie-cutter, don’t stay here. If you like a unique, personal experience, book now."

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Saint-Estephe?
The best area to stay in Saint-Estèphe is within the main village itself, or in one of the hamlets immediately surrounding it.Saint-Estèphe is a small, rural wine-producing commune in the Médoc region. The village centre is quite compact, with a church, a few local shops, and some restaurants. It's surrounded by vineyards extending in every direction, crisscrossed by small country roads. The D2, often called the "Route des Châteaux," runs through the commune, connecting many of the renowned wine estates. For couples looking for a romantic and relaxing getaway, staying in or very close to the main village is ideal. You'll be within easy reach of several prestigious wineries for tastings and tours, many of which are just a short walk or cycle ride away. The quiet setting allows for peaceful evenings and scenic strolls through the vineyards, and there are a few excellent, intimate dining options. For travellers interested in wine tourism and a deeper understanding of the region's produce, staying directly within Saint-Estèphe provides unparalleled access. You'll be perfectly positioned to visit the numerous châteaux that define the area, learning about their history and winemaking processes.
When is the best time to go to Saint-Estephe?
The best time to go to Saint-Estèphe for an enjoyable experience is during the spring (April to June) or autumn (September to October).Spring offers pleasant weather, with temperatures typically ranging from 15°C to 25°C. The vineyards are beginning to bud, and the countryside is lush and green. This period is ideal for touring châteaux and enjoying outdoor activities like cycling through the Médoc region without the intense heat of summer.Autumn, particularly September and October, is also an excellent choice. The weather remains mild, usually between 18°C and 25°C, and the vineyards are vibrant with the colours of harvest season. This is a unique time to visit if you're interested in seeing the winemaking process in full swing, as many châteaux are busy with grape picking and initial fermentation. For those planning a trip focused solely on wine tasting and vineyard tours, both spring and autumn provide comfortable conditions and opportunities to experience the region's renowned winemaking culture.
