This group of palaces and gardens in central Seville has been built and rebuilt over hundreds of years, forging a sensational combination of architectural styles.

The Royal Alcázar comprises a group of palatial buildings and gardens which have been constructed, reconstructed, expanded and renovated over a period spanning from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. Originally built in the 10th century as a fortress for the Cordovan governors of Seville, to this day parts of it are still used by the Spanish royal family when they are visiting the city, making it the oldest European royal palace still in use. At the Royal Alcázar, visitors can admire architecture from an astonishing range of periods, including Almohad, Mudéjar, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque.

To see original Almohad features, head to the Patio del Yeso (Plaster Courtyard), an area with a rectangular pool which is partially enclosed by decorative arches.

One of the most notable architectural elements of the Royal Alcázar is the palace commissioned by Pedro I in the 14th century. It was designed and constructed by both Christian and Muslim architects and is one of the best examples of Mudéjar design (a fusion of Christian and Islamic architectural elements) in the world.

Pay a visit to the central courtyard of Pedro’s palace, the Patio de las Doncellas (Courtyard of the Maidens). This area has an intriguing history –legend has it that the Moorish kings demanded 100 maidens every year from the Christian leaders and that this was the place where the maidens were presented to them.

It is also worthwhile visiting the Salon de los Embajadores (Hall of the Ambassadors), the throne room of Pedro’s palace, which is arguably the most impressive part of the palatial complex. This room has striking horseshoe-shaped arches and a magnificent, semi-spherical, domed ceiling made from carved and gilded wood.

Finish off your visit with a leisurely walk around the extensive, peaceful gardens, wandering among the various pools and fountains, such as the baths of Pedro’s mistress, María de Padilla.

Situated in the historic district of Seville, the Old Town, on the east bank of the Guadalquivir River, the Royal Alcázar is open every day with the exception of national holidays. There is a small admission fee.
