Spectacular atmosphere and impressive history come together in Manila’s sprawling city park.

Rizal Park is one of Manila’s most iconic locations, home to many of the city’s best attractions. From the much-acclaimed monument dedicated to national hero José Rizal, for whom the park was renamed, to the beautiful and relaxing gardens showcasing some of the most gorgeous plant species that the Philippines has to offer, Rizal Park provides a wonderful way of whiling away your time in the steamy capital city.

For over 200 years, people have enjoyed strolling through Rizal Park, stopping to admire the many fountains, manicured gardens and enjoying the excellent children’s playground (which does charge a small entrance fee). Kids can splash in the fountains, climb up and slide down brightly coloured animal statues and let their imaginations run wild in this dedicated space.

The stunning Japanese and Chinese Gardens are a particularly impressive attraction, with a range of tropical flowers including orchids, ferns and a number of different trees. The Orchidarium is also home to a beautiful butterfly sanctuary. Rizal Park features a number of different trails and areas to explore for some peace. Cascading waterfalls in Reflection Point provide a nice respite from the crowds, while the Trellis of Waves features a lovely, romantic walk through a tunnel of vines. The Reflexology Walk aims to sooth and calm your ailments with “healing” stones. More adventurous types can enjoy action-packed fun at the Rocky Trail climbing wall.

José Rizal’s monument is the focal point of the park, and the area is also the resting place of his remains following his execution in 1896. A light-and-sound show dedicated to the country’s hero is presented in English and Filipino every evening from Wednesday to Sunday, telling the story of Rizal’s last moments. More information on times and admission fees can be found on the National Parks Development Committee’s website.

Located near to the Walled City, Rizal Park is easily reached by public transportation, including the light rail system. Get off at United Nations station and walk the short distance to the park. Admission is free and the park is open every day.
