![Sua construção é assinada pelo arquiteto espanhol Adolfo Morales de los Rios (também responsável pelo Palácio Episcopal São Joaquim) e é um exemplo raro de igreja construída em estilo neomourisco.
Pela Bula “Ad universas orbis ecclesias” do Papa Leão XIII, de 27 de abril de 1892, foi reorganizada a hierarquia eclesiástica da Igreja no Brasil, que até então constava de apenas um arcebispado católico, em São Salvador da Bahia, e de onze bispados sufragâneos. Duas Províncias Eclesiásticas católicas foram criadas, a saber: uma no Norte, com sede em São Salvador da Bahia, e a outra no Sul, sendo a diocese do Rio de Janeiro elevada à categoria de Sé Metropolitana.
