Once the center of Denmark’s royal power, today this commuter town has outlet shopping, superb museums, nature trails and one of the nation’s oldest bakeries.

From a quaint town center to modern shopping malls, public art, curious museums, lakes and forests, Ringsted has plenty to offer year round. Founded as a market town in medieval times, Ringsted was once the seat of the Danish royal family. Today it occupies a convenient location in central Zealand, surrounded by lush countryside and a quick train ride from central Copenhagen.

In the heart of the town center is Church of St. Bendt, a Rromanesque masterpiece holding tombs of esteemed monarchs. The imposing Valdemar the Great Statue stands in the main square, one of several works of art decorating the streets. Shoppers will find boutiques and brand-name stores showcasing the latest fashion trends. Take a break at a pavement café and sample tasty baked goods at the 220-year-old Hansens Konditori and Café.

Dedicate time to browsing the collection of gramophones, records, televisions, tape recorders and radios at Ringsted Radiomuseum. Ringsted Museum and Archive retraces the town’s agricultural and industrial history. It’s adjacent to Ringsted Windmill, a working windmill used to grind ecological flour. Transportation enthusiasts will enjoy the displays of old trams from around the world atSkjoldenæsholm Tram Museum in Jystrup.

Discover Zealand’s natural scenery by biking and walking along Ringsted Oplevelsessti, a trail that cuts through Vrangeskov Forest on the shores of Haraldsted Lake. Kærehave Wood is magical at Christmas when it hosts a festive holiday tree market. Spot 150 bird species, amphibians and reptiles at KværkebyBird Sanctuary. Skjoldenæsholm and St. Bøgeskovare other picturesque forests to explore on foot.

For a rainy day activity, head toRingsted Svømmeland and have fun splashing around in pools and riding waterslides. Ringsted Outlet is a shopper’s haven, with stores offering discounts on brands such as Levi’s and Nike.

Ringsted is easy to reach by taking the train from Copenhagen’s central station. Visit the town on a daytrip or use it as a laid-back retreat after touring the many sights of Denmark’s capital city.

"We stayed in two rooms as the first one was at the end of the corridor and you got disturbed by people using the stairs which were right on the other side of the wall.
