Head for the hills above Salt Lake City to enjoy the fresh air and fragrant scents of this botanical paradise on the University of Utah campus. Forty hectares of landscaped parkland bordering Red Butte Creek to the north have been given over to native vegetation. The park is a popular spot for picnics, offering inspiring views across the valley from its manicured lawns. Sit in the shade of an ancient tree and catch up on your reading, or take a hike through the natural area to examine some of the plants that grow wild in Utah. In summer the Garden Amphitheatre hosts concerts by some of the biggest names in rock and jazz, drama performances and free film screenings from the Sundance Institute. A year-round programme of floral exhibits, sculpture and art exhibitions, lectures and practical workshops complements the natural attractions. The garden bursts into life every spring with thousands of daffodils, flowering crab apple trees and delicate wisteria bringing a seasonal splash of colour. The Rose Garden is a major attraction in summer, with many different varieties wafting their heady scents through the warm air. The views from the Four Seasons Courtyard at sunset are spectacular. Autumn sees the arboretum at its most photogenic, with the constantly changing colours catching the last rays of late summer sun. When the snows come, the park is transformed into a winter wonderland, with wreath-making workshops to prepare for the festive season.Red Butte Garden is open every day except Thanksgiving (fourth Thursday in November), the last week in December and New Year. Half-price admission is offered during the winter months, and guided tours can be booked at the visitor centre for a small fee. Check the website for details of concerts, workshops and seasonal events.
