This easy-going beach town on the country’s northeast coast is a favourite destination for surfers, backpackers, and others in pursuit of top-class beaches and nature walks.
Once a sleepy fishing village, Punta del Diablo has grown into one of Uruguay’s top low-budget travel destinations. Surfers, nature-lovers, and bohemians have flocked to this lovely town, drawn by its picturesque beaches and its proximity to the remarkable Santa Teresa National Park. Hit the beach, head out on a scenic nature walk, then relax with a meal at a local seafood restaurant.
Small, leisurely Punta del Diablo is best navigated on foot. Follow one of the sand roads that cross the village and lead down to the beautiful beaches, which are patrolled by lifeguards throughout the day. The popular Playa del Rivero is a protected bay with clean waves and spectacular sunsets, the latter of which is best enjoyed at one of the beach bars there. Over at Playa de la Viuda, a sweeping beach with strong waves and trendy homes, you will find a somewhat younger crowd.
Head to Playa de los Botes to sit on the rocks and watch fishermen in brightly-coloured boats as they unload the daily haul. An artisanal market puts handicrafts and souvenirs on display nearby. You can rent surfboards in the area, and surf lessons are available at many town accommodation. Back in town, dine on fresh local seafood at one of the village’s restaurants then head on to a bar with live music.
Punta del Diablo is blessed with the gorgeous natural setting of Santa Teresa National Park. Follow trails that wind through orchards and arrive on cosy beaches. Take a stroll along the boardwalks to various lookout points, keeping an eye out for native birds, and pay a visit to the 18th-century hilltop stronghold named Fortaleza de Santa Teresa. The park is well-equipped with picnic places and camping grounds.
Make your way to Estación Biológica Potrerillo de Santa Teresa, a biological reserve on the side of a large lagoon. Take a tour by boat or four-wheel-drive and try to spot birds, otters, or the world’s largest rodent: the capybara.
Punta del Diablo is busiest during its peak season, which runs from Christmas to February, although even then the beaches tend not to seem too crowded. Throughout the rest of the year, you will get to enjoy this beach paradise without all the others. Since there is only one ATM in the village, try to have cash on you when you arrive.
