The best area to stay in Porto is Ribeira, located along the Douro River.
Ribeira is the historic heart of Porto, characterised by its narrow, winding streets, colourful medieval buildings, and bustling riverfront promenade. It's incredibly walkable, with many key attractions like the Dom Luís I Bridge and the Cais da Ribeira right on its doorstep. You'll find numerous restaurants, cafes, and shops located amongst its ancient architecture.
Couples will find Ribeira particularly appealing for its romantic setting. Evening strolls along the river, enjoying a meal with views of the Douro, and easy access to boat tours make for a memorable experience. Its close proximity to the port wine lodges across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia is also a major draw.
For those who prefer a slightly quieter, yet still central, experience with upscale shopping and grander avenues, the Cedofeita and Boavista areas are excellent choices. Cedofeita, just north of the historic centre, offers a mix of traditional and modern, with art galleries and independent boutiques along Rua de Miguel Bombarda. Boavista, further west, is known for its wide boulevards, cultural institutions like the Casa da Música, and a more contemporary feel.
