Designer Owned Suite in Historic Hollywood District
We designed this meticulously built suite with the goal of creating a sustainable, beautiful tiny home experience unlike any we’ve seen. Awash in natural light, it is nestled between two lushly planted outdoor spaces adorned with palm trees and a large water fountain. The property is located in the Hollywood district, one of Portland’s oldest, beautiful walkable neighborhoods, less than fifteen minutes from downtown. And just 30 minutes from the Columbia Gorge waterfall area.
A few details: The suite is sided in traditional Japanese charred wood. During the day main room converts in just a moment from sleeping to a sitting room looking out to the main patio, or an efficient workspace with a desk concealed in the casework. The smaller west patio has a casual covered dining table that can seat four. There is ample closet space, a yoga mat and meditation cushion.
A large three panel slider opens to turn the entire suite into an indoor/outdoor space. It is a perfect spot to enjoy your morning cappuccino while you look out to the private south patio garden. The kitchenette has a Delonghi Espresso Machine, a hot water kettle by Fellow, a small microwave and small refrigerator stocked with sparkling water. Lavazza espresso, local teas and snacks are also complimentary. The full bath is clad in deep blue artisan tile. The heated stone tile floor makes the morning even more comfortable.
It includes one-of-a-kind furnishings by artist and designer Nicole Misiti and art by prominent Portland artists.
A library of books from local booksellers includes literature by local authors and poets, city and regional guidebooks, guide books, natural history about the Willamette Valley, Columbia River Gorge and the history of Portland.
On the bookshelf you will find our own Smart Happy Good Guide to Eating well in Portland. It includes our current favorite restaurants and bars. There is also our guide to off the beaten path independently owned bookstores, shops, local hikes, parks and gardens. (Portland has beautiful gardens.)
Why we do this the way we do: We named our endeavor Smart Happy Good. Smart: Travel rewards the curious who like to engage with the local culture of a place. Happy: Joyful travel derives in part by connecting with all that is alive and vital. Good: The places we design are self-sufficient, strive for equanimity by restoring balance in our surroundings and the way we travel and work.
This is our third vacation property, but the first we have been able to build from the ground up. It is designed to leave a tiny carbon footprint. The cladding, a traditional Japanese building material called Shou Shugi Ban, is a rain screen covering the entire structure. Rainwater is collected in hidden gutters, then stored in cisterns which in turn irrigate the entire property. Plants are drought tolerant and maintained without pesticides. Trees and shrubs attract pollinators and birds (hummingbirds being our favorite). The suite wrapped in a locally made, best-of-class breathable membrane making the house as energy efficient as possible. Operable skylights and a ceiling fan offer an alternative to using the heat-pump air-conditioning.

We were pleasantly surprised with not only the beautiful cottage but also all of the details to make our stay comfortable and easy. From the delicious chocolate chip cookies that welcomed us but the well stocked kitchen and bathroom.
Looks like the pictures, super cozy and comfortable . We loved that there were complimentary snacks and beverages along with a cleaning crew so we didn't have to adult and could pretend to be teenagers (luxury!!). The neighborhood is lovely and easy to navigate.
Definitely recommended!
This was an amazingly designed guest house and fantastic spot to be during the recent Portland ice storm. Whole Foods, restaurants, French bakery within walking distance. Extremely considerate hosts, great neighborhood for walking, could not have asked for more!
The architecture, the design, the colors, and the comfort of this location were absolutely tremendous. Clean and bright. Small but comfortable. Outstanding small touches (carmels and water/drinks) were delightful. Beautiful outdoor patio. I loved it. Close (walkable) to great coffee shops and grocery stores. I had a lovely time.
The hosts put much love and effort to make the property unique and inviting. Nice decor, wonderful patio with water fountain,
It is small, and the working and kitchen amenities are minimal. The window coverings let light in, but just put a pillow over your head. It works out beautifully.
The hosts are personable and eager to make your stay comfortable.
We stayed at this property while attending a film festival in Portland's Hollywood district. The entire process was stress free- the hosts are super quick to respond to questions. The ADU is sleek, stylish, and modern and was spotless. Super comfy, all mod cons provided! Also has access to a lovely patio with a fountain. Very quiet and serene, but walk a few blocks and you have a choice of some awesome bars and restaurants.Whole Foods is also just a few blocks away. An all around wonderful place and great experience. greatexperience!awon isis is
We enjoyed our great stay in the suite. The interior decor and outdoor beauty of the place were no doubt some of the best we have seen - upscale and creative. The hosts communicated well in advance of our check-in and instructions were clear. They even popped in to check up on us after we arrived.
What could have made it even better: A working ceiling light. The host advised us that they have to call an electrician but did not say when. It didn't get fixed during our 7-night stay and we did not hear about it again. There were other lights in the unit, but the lack of the main ceiling light in the sleep/work area was a bit frustrating. We requested Kleenex when the host popped by but never got it. Finally, there were ants in the unit. To be fair, we did not report this during our stay, but we didn't think there was an easy solution. The place was not dirty so we just learned to get along with our cohabitants. Since the suite is next to a beautiful garden, perhaps it's the time of the year.
Despite these suggestions, we had a good stay. Little touches were nice, such as complimentary welcome drinks and snacks in a very nice fridge. The kettle was elegant and the espresso machine was a welcome feature. We also loved the walking proximity to Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, and the Max line. The decor in the entire place - sleep/work area, kitchenette, bathroom, outdoor space - were second to none.
