In this coastal village’s charming centre with its 15th-century origins peruse the timber-framed market for local produce.

Plouescat is a pretty village near the sea facing the English Channel. Its green Brittany countryside, quaint centre and stunning water views make it a favourite among campers and RV owners. Relax on the powdery beach sand and enjoy views of the surrounding rock formations.

Talk a long walk along the coastline to see its remarkable rock formations, sand dunes, vast meadows of tall grass and spectacular views of the sea. Rocks take bizarre forms, such as the Rock of the Sprites. Try to spot the southern coast of England in the distance. Have a picnic on the soft, sandy beach and swim in the sea in summer. Local foods include crêpes, pastries, fish and seaweed.

Try your luck at the casino, which adds to the jolly seaside mood of the village centre. Enjoy some of the attractions around Kernic Bay, such as horse racing on the sand. Learn to operate a catamaran at the Porsguen Nautical Centre. Rent kayaks and surfboards at Point Passion Beach.

Learn about the creatures living under the sea at the Océanopolis in Brest. It holds more than 10,000 marine animals. Visit the aquarium and ride the ferry to one of the nearby islands of Ouessant, Molene and Sein.

For a change of scenery, visit the Miellerie de Plouescat and see the creation of honey in all its forms. Learn about the process involved in creating the tasty treat. Try many different types of honey to note slight variances in flavour. Drink chouchenn, a drink made from honey.

The region is mostly agricultural, producing much of France’s artichokes, cauliflower and onions. The village is fairly wet year-round, resulting in an area of green fields and meadows. Locals are known as Plouescatais and a small number still speak the Breton language.

Plouescat is located in Brittany in northwestern France, a 50-kilometre (30-mile) drive from Brest. Fly into Brest Bretagne Airport and rent a car.

Visit Plouescat for a honey-filled time near stunning coastal formations and a sandy beach.
