Bogota’s most iconic public square is dedicated to a hero of the Latin American wars for independence andlined with historical landmarks.

Downtown Bogotá’s most important town square is the Plaza de Bolívar, a grand public space that has been a city landmark for centuries. Admire the magisterial design of the plaza’s many monuments and administrative buildings, which have been built in a wide array of styles over time. The square is no museum, however, and it regularly springs to life with markets, concerts and political demonstrations.

Originally established in the 16th century, the Plaza de Bolívar was renovated in 1960 in honour of Colombia’s 150th year of independence. It is named after Simón Bolívar, a prominent general from Venezuela who played an important role in the wars that culminated in Latin America’s freedom from Spanish rule.

Look around the square and take note of the many architectural styles that coexist on the Plaza de Bolívar. The eccentric mix of designs is testimony to the city’s rich and multifaceted history.

Look out for the Palacio de Justicia, which was twice burned down by protestors and twice, in turn, rebuilt. The square is still used for political demonstrations, although these are usually nowadays mostly fire-free. Appreciate the neoclassical stylings of the Palacio Liévano and the Capitolio Nacional, home to the Congress of Colombia.

Out on the square, vendors sell souvenirs and snacks. Other enterprising locals encourage visitors to take photos with vividly costumed llamas.

A variety of cultural events are held at the Plaza de Bolívar. One crowd favourite is the Concierto la Esperanza, a free music festival held annually in May. During the holiday period, the square is festively lit and decorated with large Christmas trees.

Located right at the heart of downtown Bogotá, the Plaza de Bolívar is the perfect place to begin your tour of the city’s historic centre and the much-loved district of La Candelaria. Nearby attractions include the Casa de la Moneda, the Luis Ángel Arango Library, and the Botero Museum. The square is easily accessible by public bus or subway, and metered parking is available at the Luis Ángel Arango Library.
