Viareggio has excellent beaches, restaurants and shops, but it is the city’s Pineta di Ponente (Pine Forest) that sets it apart from other Italian resort towns. The beautiful Mediterranean pines of the forest provide a peaceful alternative to the bustling promenade. Take a break from the city and enjoy the natural surroundings of the Pineta di Ponente.
The Pineta di Ponente is divided into the Western Forest and the Eastern Forest. The Western Forest, which is located closer to the centre of town, gets more visitors. Although this section of the forest is small, it is an ideal spot for a relaxing break. Visitors can explore the forest on foot, or rent a bike or take a pony-drawn carriage to cover more ground. The Western Forest also has amenities such as a mini golf course, tennis courts and a swan lake.
In contrast, the Eastern Forest is larger and more diverse. Within this sprawling area there are playgrounds, restaurants and bars. Visitors can travel around the perimeter of the park on a bike or in a car. Be sure to visit the Villa Borbone, a historic three-storey palazzo situated among the pines. Villa Borbone hosts travelling exhibits and there are often cultural events taking place in the villa’s lovely garden.

The Eastern Forest has a variety of attractions that make it an ideal place to bring children. Kids will love riding the carousal or the miniature train, playing mini golf and riding bicycles. While there are numerous vending stands throughout the forest that offer refreshments and tasty snacks, you might want to bring a picnic to eat in shade of the pines.
The beginning of the Eastern Forest is only 1 kilometre (0.5 miles) from the centre of town, and is easily accessible by bike, bus or car. It is also possible to walk directly from the forest to the beach.
