See Germany’s largest museum of contemporary art, known for its fascinating exhibitions on architecture and masterpieces by artists such as Dalí and Picasso.

The Pinakothek der Moderne (Modern Gallery) is a museum showcasing contemporary works of art by masters such as Salvador Dalí and Picasso. The building is also recognised as a modern work of art. Designed by German architect Stephan Braunfels, the Pinakothek der Moderne is made up of huge columns and large panels of glass. Inside, there are four main areas of the museum covering art, architecture, design and graphic art. A large dome at the centre of the building connects the four halls with the entrance.

Explore Germany’s largest exhibit on special construction and design in the architecture section on the ground floor. There are original plans and sketches from some of the best architects in the world. Move on to the Neue Sammlung (New Collection) on the second floor, which houses one of the largest design collections in the world. See furniture, applied arts and graphic design. The graphic art section features hundreds of thousands of prints and drawings. Browse displays about the origins of contemporary furniture design, computer technology and the designs of vehicles.

Peruse the Modern Art Collection upstairs, which features works from the most famous names in modern art such as Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí.

A visit to the Pinakothek der Moderne can be incorporated into a trip to see three significant Bavarian galleries, with the Alte Pinakothek and the Neue Pinakothek in close proximity. There is a small admission fee with discounts on Sundays. Rent an audio guide, available in English, to make the most of your experience.

The museum opens daily except on Mondays. There is a fee for entry.

Parking is available for a fee on the streets around the Pinakothek der Moderne, though it can be hard to find a spot, especially on weekends. Take a bus to the stop just outside the museum.
