Piedmont Park is a welcome green oasis in the heart of Atlanta. The expanse of lawns and gardens are perfect for escaping the hustle and bustle of the city. Whether you want to just sit back and relax, enjoy lunch al fresco or burn off some energy with a run or a game of tennis, this park is the place to go.
Originally a forested area, the park was developed as a fair ground and exhibition site, before the land was purchased by the city authorities in the early 19th century for public use. Join one of the free historical guided tours to learn about its colourful past.
Follow the network of wide, winding paths around the park to discover the many scenic features. The 2.7-kilometre circuit is popular with both joggers and skaters at the weekends.
At the south end of the park you’ll find Lake Clara Meer, created in 1895 for the Cotton States and International Exposition. Today, it is a popular spot for fishing, and the waters are stocked with bream and catfish. If you want to try your hand at this relaxing pastime, make sure you have a valid fishing licence.
In the hot summer months, join the crowds cooling off in the Legacy Fountain. This water feature consists of over 70 water jets shooting up to nine metres in the air. Alternatively, head to the park’s Aquatic Centre, a newly renovated outdoor pool with lap lanes.
There are two playgrounds in the park to keep even the most energetic kids happy. Choose from the Noguchi Playscape, a geometrically designed, colourful playground complete with swings, slides and a sand pit, or the Mayor’s Grove Playground, featuring interactive games for all ages.
Once you’ve worked up an appetite, head to one of the designated picnic areas. There are also 22 barbecue grills for public use.
Piedmont Park is open from 6 am to 11 pm, although some attractions close earlier. As parking is limited, especially at the weekend, it is best to travel by public transport. The nearest station is Midtown.
