PEACE-IN-THE-FOREST RETREAT offers singles, couples, families, artists, writers, cyclists, forest lovers and others a reprieve from the rat race by providing privacy and quiet in a very beautiful and comfortable, custom-built cabin, immersed in hardwood and pine forests of the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Located near the Blue Ridge Escarpment – that incredibly beautiful transition between the blue ridge mountains of the Appalachians and the SC foothills. The cabin is located on 100 acres of forested land with many hiking trails that we are fortunate to be stewards of. It is also located within 15-30 min from Table Rock, Keowee, Devils Fork, Ceasars Head, & Jones Gap St. Parks; 30-40 min from Hartwell, Lakes Keowee & Jocassee as well as DuPont STate Forest(NC); less than an hour from whitewater rivers (Chattooga, French Broad & more), & many trout streams & waterfalls. It is 30 min from Greenville, SC; 40 min from Brevard, NC; 40 min from Clemson ; 45 min from Hendersonville, NC & 1 hour & 15 min from Asheville, NC.

THE CABIN - [more images avail.upon request] We built the cabin in 2004 from pine trees that we cut and sawed here on the property; its surrounded by 100s of acres of privately owned forest land with scattered homes. This provides a rare kind of quiet, broken by the sounds of animals, the wind and rain. The dark night skies also allow for great star gazing. The exterior of the cabin is made of white pine board and batten while the interior consists of white pine paneling and sheet rock, yellow pine floors, and tall cathedral ceilings throughout. Original oil paintings, quilted wall hangings, stain glass and other art impart a pleasant aesthetic quality to the cabin.

LOCATION, LOCATION... - The list of “Activities” below – with the exception of hiking, biking, and wildlife viewing - are not actually onsite but within easy driving distance. For example, there are many fine golf courses, fishing and boating opportunities within 10 - 45 min. While nearby Pickens and Easley offer some restaurants and cultural/entertainment opportunities, Greenville clearly offers the widest and finest selection of these. The beautiful downtown district has many fine restaurants, the Peace Center (plays, ballet, music), museums, galleries and shopping. One of the recent additions is the restoration of the Reedy River Falls area in West End, the centerpiece of which is a curved suspension bridge (walking only), truly an architectural wonder, which overlooks the falls, downtown area and park. Other local cultural attractions include the Pickens County Museum of Art and History, located 10 min away in Pickens. The museum also operates the restored Hagood Mill site, one of the few active grist mills in the region. Most Saturdays there is music and more at the Hagood Mill, celebrating the early history of the area in terms of music, storytelling, blacksmithing, quilting and more. Its open for tours Wed-Sat.

DAVID'S FEATURE FAVORITE SWEET SPOT – I highly recommend kayaking, canoeing or swimming on Lake Jocassee - one of the most beautiful lakes in the Southeast. I will rent canoes and kayaks depending when available. This deep, clear lake is literally perched at the edge of the mountains – and is thus fed by clear mountain streams, whose waterfalls, in some cases, actually fall directly into the lake. The surrounding mountain landscape with rich forested slopes and coves, coupled with the wide, deep waters provide a uniquely beautiful scene. Only one small area of this large lake has been developed - a small amount of private land and a small amount that is part of Devils Fork State Park but the rest is undeveloped forest belonging to Duke Power, SC/NC, or US the Forest Service.

ECOLOGISTS DELIGHT - We are located in the Upper Foothills Physiographic Province where we have a blend of Piedmont and Mountain species. This area is the southern tip of the range for white pine, Eastern Hemlock, rosebay rhododendron and other woody and herbaceous species. Much of the land is classified as ranging from oak-hickory forest to various pine-hardwood mixes (white, Virginia and Shortleaf pines) to cove hardwood-hemlock forests. Historically, this was Cherokee land – points and other artifacts can still be found today. It was settled mostly in the late 1700s and 1800s by white settlers. Scattered homesites can still be found from this period. Cotton and corn was planted on much of the land in the area as late as the 1920s and 1930s but most was abandoned at that time. These cultivated and terraced lands, once abandoned, eventually reverted to forest and are now dominated by 70-80 year old Virginia pines and mixed hardwoods. Evidence of old terraces and erosion gullies are still evident in the forest. Other parts of our property were never plowed historically. Rather, these somewhat more steep lands were periodically harvested for timber and other wood products; heavily grazed by cattle (woodland grazing) and burned periodically. These disturbances were mild compared to cultivation impacts. The result is a much more productive and ecologically healthy forest. These forests are dominated by chestnut oak, white and red oaks, hickories, maples, interspersed with yellow poplar, shortleaf pine and large white pine. Deciduous magnolias, Silverbells, basswood, beech, sourwood, dogwoods and other species are also also prevalent. Common on some sites are ‘laurel slicks’ – thick patches of mountain laurel that appear as shiny, green, ‘slicks’ from a distance. In the spring, nothing is finer than the bountiful white blooms of Mt. Laurel. These forests support a wide array of birds, reptiles and mammals. Some of the common mammals include – deer, turkey, squirrels, fox, skunk, bear, raccoons, bobcat and, more recently, coyote

Quiet beautiful nature

Great cabin in wooded area. Bed is very comfortable. Walking paths are great. Quiet with beautiful nature all around. Cabin had everything we needed for cooking, enough towels and washcloths. Favorite place and we have done plenty of rentals during retirement years.

Great retreat

This is a lovely little hideaway in the woods—very peaceful, as advertised. The location is great to access places like Table Rock State Park and also Greenville. The cabin isn’t anything super fancy, but it’s got everything you need in a serene setting.

Quiet and peaceful.

We truly enjoyed our stay. The cabin is cozy and rustic. Being located in the middle of the woods, the surroundings are quiet and peaceful but expect to be tolerant of some dirt, spiders and the occasional palmetto bug. We would like to stay again.

Our Intro to NW South Carolina

As first time visitors to the area, we found this cabin delightful. Tucked in the woods between Pickens and Easley, it's location was private, yet not remote. The cabin was equipped with everything we needed for a multiweek stay. A highlight was the marked hiking trails on the property itself. Nearby were many state parks, golf courses, waterfalls, and lakes. Great accomodations and a beautiful area!

Perfect Social Distancing Spot

My wife and I had a great stay at the cabin and would stay again if we are in the area. We enjoyed the trails on the property. We had everything that we expected for accommodations and quite frankly enjoyed the solitude when we weren’t exploring the local lake and trails. The host’s friendly dogs were a bonus each morning. No complaints and highly recommended if you just want an escape.

Private Cabin in the woods

The directions to the house given by host were clear and the path to the house was well marked. The house sat in a wooded area and was exactly as described. It had the privacy I was seeking, but was within half an hour of Table Rock State Park and local restaurants when I wanted to venture out. Waking up in the morning, I loved seeing the sun shine through the stained glass window in the bedroom. The rest of the house had great local art, from quilt hangings to drawings. I slept well in the comfortable queen-sized bed. Many thoughtful details were included, such as extra blankets, coffee, shampoo, and other things. I would definitely stay here again.

Peace in the Forest Means It

Spectacular in its solitude, "green walls" and birds. Just-right rustic, ie, simple but elegant in its own way with amenities that matter to me: wifi, washer/dryer, and windows with screens -- and all the amenities that scores of unspoiled, beloved acres provide.

Just what we were looking for, with two furry bonuses

Loved the cabin, and David was a pleasure. He was helpful, responsive, considerate and friendly. It's a cozy cabin that has everything we needed, nestled on David's property with lots of hiking trails. The bonuses were his two dogs. They were the happy greeters, friendly companions and excellent hiking guides. I swear they understood English. Thanks David!

Nice peaceful get away in nature!

This was perfect for my husband and I. Nice cabin. Beautiful surroundings. Close to some great hikes. Even had some nice trails on the property where we saw two deer. Love the outside deck in back. Enjoyed all the birds that came to visit once we put seed out. Hummingbird came and buzzed my husband. Next day we put out a hummingbird feeder with 1 to 4 ratio of sugar water and many more came. We loved the evening watching and hearing all the birds. Very private and away from all the noise but close enough to venture to some awesome areas. David was great in checking up on us through the VRBO email all the while giving us privacy. I can tell he is just an all around nice guy. Thanks! We hope will be back!

Exactly what we hoped for

The view into the treelike and cove on the porch was where we found ourselves looking most of the time we were at the cabin. The trails around are great to see a variety of flora/fauna. We saw chipmunks, a resting turkey hen, some whitetail deer, and many other birds, all without leaving the property. The proximity to unique region only natural sites like waterfalls, mountain ridges, monadnocks, creek bottoms, and many other small, but awesome sights. Pickens is a great small town to wander around and spend some money to support locals. We were a family of 4, two adults and two early teen daughters. There was plenty of room, just enough technology, but not centered in the cabin which we loved. We always bring a box of rental house "must haves", but didn't need to use anything within it. The dogs were super friendly and knew the rules. We'll come back for sure.

Mountain Peace

Cozy, comfortable and much more spacious than we anticipated yet very secluded. Perfect for 2 but can easily accommdate up to 4 without being cramped. Middle of nowhere feel but not more than 15 minutes from anything you might need. The hiking trails are great and beautifully marked so no veering off. We took our dogs and with a little creativity were able to keep them contained on the back deck with no fear of them running off into the woods. A real plus for sure. We went for rest and relaxtion and achieved our goal. Would definitely like to return at some point if we are able. We are in our 70's and appreciated the fact that there are many grab bars in place. Thank God we don't need them yet but you surely never know. I prepared all our meals there and felt kitchen was perfectly functional. Owners are great and overall this was a wonderful little getaway for us. Perfect for nature lovers !

Serenity in the woods

First, David was a wonderful host! The communication was great! He cares about his property and his guests, and that is so appreciated. We loved the fact that it was tucked back out of the way in a natural setting, making us feel like we were in a tree house when waking up and when sitting on the back deck. Everything we needed was provided for us. If you need a "refresh", this is a great place to do it! We only wish we had more time there. We'll be back! Thank you, David, for an awesome stay! :)
