Overlooked by the Taormina Cathedral, the Piazza del Duomo is one of the main squares in the town. Marking the center of the cobbled plaza is a gorgeous fountain, while boutiques and terraced cafés line its edges. Appreciate the enchanting atmosphere of this plaza filled with trailing plants and floral displays.
Gaze up at the rose window and stone façade of the Taormina Cathedral on the square’s eastern side. The structure was initially built in the 1200s and then rebuilt in the 18th century. Admire its fortress-like design and enter to see the opulent interior and religious art pieces.
Facing the church in the square’s center is the Piazza di Duomo Fountain, a Baroque 17th-century sculpture. Take photos of the four columns hoisting a female minotaur, which is the symbol of the town. Relax on the steps of the fountain and watch people go by. In the northeastern corner of the square stands the 18th-century Palazzo dei Giurati, which serves as the town hall.
Get a sense of the local culture with a visit to the summer market held in this piazza. Browse the various handicrafts and works of art designed by locals. The market opens in the mornings, with its stalls displaying spices, cheeses and meats in addition to souvenirs and crafts.
The town’s main street, the Corso Umberto, runs across the northern side of the plaza. Head east along this road that leads to Taormina’s restaurants, shops and principal attractions, such as the Piazza IX Aprile, the Church of St. Augustine and the Italian Opera Taormina.
