Shop for art and handicrafts from across the African continent and watch the busy action of Long Street from a café balcony.

Visit the Pan African Market, a one-stop venue for purchasing authentic souvenirs from all parts of Africa. This colorful market features a varied array of art and crafts spread across three floors of a Victorian-era mansion. Founded as a humble flea market with five traders in 1997, today the Pan African Market has representatives from over 14 nations. It serves as both a retail outlet and an introduction to the many fascinating cultures of this diverse continent.

Meet artisans and tradespeople from Cameroon, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Senegal, South Africa and others. These groups have transformed the rooms and corridors of the building into visual representations of their national heritage. Chat with the traders and get a deeper understanding of the goods offered.

Browse for everything from handmade jewelry to leather goods, musical instruments, paintings and textiles. Admire the collections of ceremonial and tribal masks. Voodoo dolls, wooden animal sculptures, woven baskets and Zulu beadwork are among the unique treasures you may find. Working seamstresses can measure you for tailor-made traditional African dresses and suits.

Take a break from shopping and enjoy a cold beer or sip coffee at the market’s second-floor café. To stay aligned with the market, the café is decorated with African antiques and paraphernalia. Sit on the balcony and observe as locals and tourists wander along Long Street, Cape Town’s major nightlife district.

The market stands at the heart of Long Street, in Cape Town’s city center. Get here via taxis, minibus taxis, public buses or the city’s sightseeing tourist bus. Major city attractions within walking distance include Green Market Square and The Company’s Garden. Find an assortment of bars, cafés, pubs and restaurants on Long Street.

Cape Town’s Pan African Market is open from Monday to early on Saturday. Most vendors accept debit and credit cards in addition to cash. Try a bit of bargaining in order to bring the price down before finalizing your purchase.
