When is the best time to go to Pamplona?
The best time to go to Pamplona largely depends on whether you wish to experience the world-famous San Fermín festival or prefer a quieter visit to explore the city's history and culture. For those eager to witness the San Fermín festival and the running of the bulls, the first two weeks of July (typically 6th-14th) are essential. During this period, the city transforms into a lively hub of celebration, music, and tradition. You'll find yourself amidst large crowds enjoying the street parties, parades, and, of course, the early morning "encierro" or bull run. This is an exciting and unique cultural experience, though it requires booking accommodation and activities far in advance due to high demand. If you prefer a more relaxed visit to explore Pamplona's historic centre, enjoy its parks, and savour its renowned gastronomy without the festival crowds, then late spring (May-June) or early autumn (September-October) are ideal. The weather during these months is generally pleasant, with comfortable temperatures superb for walking around. You can explore landmarks like the Pamplona Cathedral, the Ciudadela, and the city walls at your own pace, and enjoy the local pinxtos bars without the intense crowds of the festival period.
