The pink sand and perfect blue water of this small cove are ideal for relaxing beneath the morning sun of Easter Island.

Ovahe Beach is a secluded bay set on the northern coastline of Easter Island. Relax here amid serene and untamed beauty for a pleasant alternative to visiting the island’s giant moai statues. Ovahe Beach is instantly recognizable for its striking pink color, which is a blend of volcanic slag and weather-beaten white coral. Caves pierce the framing cliffs and are thought to be the ancient homes of the Rapa Nui people.

The beach is at its best in the morning and before the tourist crowds arrive. You’ll discover an all-but deserted curve of sand to sit on, top up your tan and look out over the shimmering water. Early risers might want to get here for daybreak and watch as the sunrise marks the beginning of a new day. There is no direct sunlight here in the afternoon, which is a welcome break for those that prefer to sit in the shade.

Warm year-round sea temperatures make paddling in the seashore enjoyable. The bright colors of bountiful coral, fish species and turtles are visible through the glass-like water. Bring snorkeling gear to get an up-close view of the exotic marine flora and fauna. Strong currents are common and there’s no lifeguard service so be careful when swimming.

Ovahe Beach is located 11 miles (18 kilometers) northeast of Easter Island’s main town, Hanga Roa. The most convenient way to get here is to a rent car, bicycle or quadbike. A rocky trail leads down from the main road to the beach. Bear in mind that the cove is sometimes inaccessible due to high tides.

Combine your time at Ovahe Beach with a visit to nearby Anakena Beach. Anakena is famous for being the supposed place where Rapa Nui leader Hotu Matu’a landed on the island. A collection of seven moai called Ahu Nau Nau stand imperiously on the cliff above the beach. It’s a short drive to Anakena from Ovahe or you can hike a trail that travels over a hill from the northern end of the bay.
