Established back in the 1920s amidst the city’s burgeoning art scene, the Orlando Museum of Art is a cultural haven in the midst of this hectic destination in the Sunshine State. Showcasing works from all over the world dating as far back as the 18th century, the museum also offers a range of exciting exhibits that offer something for the whole family.
Among the permanent collections housed in the museum are classic American masterpieces as well as more contemporary pop art, not to mention striking textiles and crafts from Africa and beyond. Head for the Art of the Ancient Americas collection to see some of the impressive pre-colonial Aztec masks, Mayan figures and other artefacts on display.
As well as these, the museum hosts all kinds of temporary exhibitions which you can find out more about online before you visit. Famous and emerging American artists often visit the gallery to talk, discuss and give master-classes on their work, from photography and painting to ceramics, sculpture and much more besides.
For a full experience of the gallery and all it has to offer, take one of its special ‘Art Gateway’ itineraries. You can also visit local theatres, festivals, art schools and landmarks with the help of museum staff, which will also give you a richer insight into Orlando’s arts scene and what it has to offer.
The museum hosts art camps in the spring and summer which offer fun opportunities to get the kids involved. These offer all sorts of activities: cartoon drawing, pottery, puppet making, and even landscape, painting and interior design.
Housed in a striking art deco style building at North Mills Avenue inside Loch Haven Park, the Orlando Museum of Art opens its doors every day but Monday and major holidays. The museum is just 10 minutes’ drive north from downtown Orlando, with free parking available on site as well as buses stopping locally. Buy a Loch Haven Cultural Pass and you’ll also secure entry to the nearby Orlando Science Center.
