Discover 10,000 years of Nevada’s history through fascinating manuscripts, photographs and films.

The Nevada Historical Society was established in 1904 and is the state’s oldest museum. The collections plot the history of the region from prehistoric times through the arrival of white settlers and on to the emergence of the mining and gambling industries, which formed the economic bedrock of the city.

The museum’s two permanent exhibitions focus on aspects of Nevada’s history. Nevada: Prisms and Perspectives interweaves five diverse but inter-related life stories representing native Nevadans, gold miners, travellers, gamblers and federal officers. Biggest Little City in the World takes its name from the city’s motto and weaves historical tales through local artefacts and stories.

The range of displays reflects Reno’s diverse cultural past, and offer the opportunity to examine Native American artefacts, as well as early prospecting equipment. The central role of gambling in the city’s past is portrayed with an array of fascinating pieces from cheating devices to neon signs and show-girl costumes. Although a little macabre, Six Legged Dan and Two Headed Slim is a must see, while the stuffed Siamese calf is always a grim favourite with the kids.

The permanent displays are complemented by special exhibitions which change on a regular basis. These include various media and can have a uniquely local flavour as the museum is a staunch supporter of local artists. Current exhibits will be listed on the museum’s website.

The Nevada Historical Society is a repository for an extensive collection of manuscripts, books and documents. The photographic collection alone contains about 300,000 photographs covering subjects from ghost towns to atomic testing.

The museum gift shop stocks a large selection of local art and jewellery and also books and Nevada-themed souvenirs and books.

The Nevada Historical Society is located close to the Fleischmann Planetarium and Science Centre on the University of Nevada Reno campus, about five minutes' drive north of the downtown area. There is free parking next to the building. You can also get there on the Sierra Spirit bus from central Reno.

The museum is open Wednesday to Saturday, except for state holidays which are listed on the website.
