If you are a military enthusiast, or even just have a passing interest in naval history, you must not miss a trip to Navy Pier, where the USS Midway is berthed. This colossal aircraft carrier holds the record as the longest-serving military vessel of the 20th century.

Aboard the USS Midway you’ll find the San Diego Aircraft Museum, featuring over 20 meticulously restored military aircraft dating from World War II all the way through to Operation Desert Storm. You’ll gain a unique perspective on life as a fighter pilot when you step up into the cockpit! The interior of the ship is also part of the museum, allowing you to discover what life was like on board. Even if you don’t have time for the full museum experience, the deck of the USS Midway is open to the public with no charge and from here you can admire the wonderful views of the San Diego coastline.

There are not only historical attractions in this area that will satisfy any military enthusiast. Many working Navy vessels also dock at Navy Pier. Some will even offer free guided tours on board, for truly current insights into the US Navy way of life. North Island Navy Station is another working military station close by. If you walk north from Navy Pier to Broadway Pier you will be able to see across the water to the aircraft carriers docked there, complete with their fighter jets.

The San Diego waterfront around Navy Pier is definitely worth exploring. Heading south, you’ll find the locally famous Fish Market Restaurant. On the former site of one of the largest tuna fleets in the world, this restaurant is the perfect spot to enjoy meal by the ocean. A little further on you come across Seaport Village, and wonderful views of Coronado Peninsular.

Navy Pier is easily accessible by public transport, and parking is available, at a small fee, if travelling by car.
