The National Museum of Colombia is the oldest museum in the country. Since its founding in 1823, it has amassed a collection of over 20,000 pieces. The building where the museum is housed was once a prison, and several of the exhibition spaces are actually converted prison cells.
The 17 permanent exhibitions are arranged chronologically, starting in pre-Hispanic Colombia and moving forwards in time. Most of the explanatory material is in Spanish, but English-language information sheets are available in every floor’s lobby and guided tours in English are available on Wednesdays.
Begin your tour on the first floor, where the diversity and richness of Colombia’s pre-colonial civilisations are on display. Gain an insight into their funeral and burial rites, and marvel over the museum’s vast collection of indigenous jewellery, gold, pottery and tools.
Head to the second floor to learn about the Colombia’s colonial era, when the country was ruled by the Spanish. Look at paintings of Spanish rulers and liberators, then seek out portraits of important figures from Colombia’s early years as an independent nation.
The third floor houses a collection of national and international artworks that date from the colonial era to the present. Look out for works by Colombia’s own masters.

The National Museum of Colombia is located just north of Bogotá’s downtown. It is easily accessible by public transport or by tourist bus, and metered parking is available nearby. Continue on to one of the other nearby city attractions, such as Torre Colpatria or the Planetarium of Bogotá.
