National Library of Scotland

Millions of examples of the written and printed word are held in this enormous repository of Scotland's past and cultural heritage.

The National Library of Scotland is the biggest library in the country, and is free to enter. It also hosts and exhibits a literary archive of serious global significance. There is an incredible array of material held in the library's collection, from manuscripts and books, to historical maps and a broad-ranging film archive. Some of the most prized pieces in holdings here include one of the last surviving complete copies of the first book ever printed, the Gutenberg Bible of 1455. On a more sombre note, the last letter of Mary, Queen of Scots is also part of the collection – it was written mere hours before her execution. The library also houses a number of the earliest books printed in Scotland and over 32,000 films stretching back through the last century. It is also the premier destination for historical research in the country. The National Library of Scotland is open to all, and entry is free of charge, but there are a few administrative tasks to be undertaken to gain access. You need to bring proof of I.D. and of your residence to obtain a Reader's Card. If you want to speed up this process, check the website before your trip. There are always a range of exhibitions going on in the library. Check out 200 years of publishing history in the John Murray Archive, including letters – both personal and professional – from people of the stature of Charles Darwin, Jane Austen and Lord Byron. Temporary exhibitions are also a regular feature – check online for more information.Begin your visit in the Visitor Centre, pausing to check the online collections and get a map of the building, or check out the Discovery Area. There's also a café where you can relax between reading sessions. The National Library of Scotland is on George IV Bridge, a street in the city centre, and is served by a number of bus routes. Parking is extremely limited. It is open Monday to Saturday, and you should check the website for opening times.
