Gatekeepers' cabin

10/10 Excellent
"The property is exactly as promoted. Great if you are after a quiet couple of days away from the city.Waking up to just the sound of wildlife with cattle and horses grazing in the paddock just outside the front door.Very close to a few smaller towns with quaint cafes and old style pubs. All in all a very enjoyable stay."

"We loved our weekend stay. A gorgeous setting that was calm and serene but had enough for the kids to do - fire pit, pool table and space to explore. Would happily recommend to anyone."

Old Church B&B

10/10 Excellent
"We visited in the winter; lovely cool weather. It’s obvious someone has a green thumb. I would love to the garden in full bloom. Even in winter the roses were fragrant and lovely. Stuart was a wonderful host, showing us the building, kitchen, our room with en suite. I love that shower!! Breakfast was laid out at 7 am for our leisure and even at 9 am (we had a bit of a lie in) was still warm and fresh. Centrally located for our travels, it was a wonderful stay!!"

It's the last place to stock up on essentials before heading deeper into the park, with a general store and a few local eateries. The Scenic Rim region, where Rathdowney is situated, is known for its rolling hills and agricultural land. For families, staying in or near Rathdowney offers convenience. You'll find a range of accommodation options, from holiday homes to guesthouses, often with more space and amenities suitable for children. The proximity to the village means easier access to supplies and a slightly less remote experience, while still being a short drive to the national park's walking trails and natural attractions like the Lower Portals.Couples looking for a peaceful escape will also appreciate the Rathdowney area. Many accommodations here offer a tranquil setting with scenic views of the surrounding countryside, superb for relaxing after a day of hiking.

When is the best time to go to Mount Barney?
The best time to visit Mount Barney is during the cooler, drier months of autumn (March to May) and spring (September to November).During these seasons, the weather is generally mild and pleasant, making it ideal for outdoor activities like hiking and bushwalking. You'll experience less humidity and fewer insects compared to the summer months, and the chance of heavy rainfall is lower. The daytime temperatures are comfortable for exploring the trails and enjoying the natural surroundings. For those planning to undertake more challenging hikes, such as summiting Mount Barney itself, the clear skies and stable conditions of autumn and spring are particularly beneficial. The trails can be steep and rugged, so good visibility and dry underfoot conditions are important for a more enjoyable and less strenuous experience.Summer (December to February) can be very hot and humid, with a higher likelihood of thunderstorms and heavy rain, which can make hiking uncomfortable and potentially hazardous.
