Discover Detroit’s unique music heritage at the former headquarters of one of the 20th-century’s top record labels.

A visit to the Motown Museum will take you on a trip through the highlights of this world-famous record label, started by Berry Gordy in the late 1950s. Located in Hitsville USA, the label’s former Detroit headquarters, this exhibition features original outfits and photographs, as well as the studio and recording equipment – a must-see for any music fan!

Step through the front door of 2648 West Grand Boulevard, passing under the iconic blue and white Hitsville sign, and discover the magic that turned Berry Gordy’s dream into one of the world’s largest independent record companies. By showing just what could be achieved with an $800 family loan, along with real drive and ambition, the museum hopes to inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs.

Walk in the footsteps of stars such as Diana Ross and The Supremes, Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson when you explore Studio A. Located on the first floor of Hitsville, this is the exact spot where the ground-breaking Motown sound was captured. Admire original instruments, including the recently restored Steinway & Sons grand piano, dating back to 1877, as well as the recording console in the Control Room.

Admire the sharp suits and glamorous costumes that marked out Motown performers. The Gallery also includes rare photos of the artists and producers at work, as well as famous memorabilia, such as the black fedora and sequined glove donated by Michael Jackson in 1988.

Head upstairs to the perfectly preserved second-floor flat that was home to Berry Gordy and his family. You’ll discover first-hand the extent to which this music visionary dedicated his life to the studio.

Motown Museum is open Tuesday to Saturday, all year round, with additional opening on Mondays in July and August. It is closed on major public holidays. Free parking is available on site, or you can reach the museum by public transport.
