Luxury renovation of an ancient stone barn in a medieval bastide village
Just off the village square of a small, quiet thirteenth-century medieval village. A two en-suite double bed, luxury, modern renovation of an ancient stone barn offers the highest standard of accommodation. The living space is arranged on a single level from the street, which leaves the terrace suspended high above the valley with fantastic views. The living space is a large, open-plan, light and airy space with one end of the apartment all glass. The living space opens out onto an elevated covered terrace projecting the occupants out into the valley below. The terrace faces away from the village and neighbouring properties, offering high levels of privacy. It is above the roof line of those few properties below it. Large triple glass floor-to-ceiling doors and a glass balustrade on the terrace ensure tremendous views are always available. Facing South East, the apartment makes the most of the sun all year round and is especially evident from early morning when it fills both the terrace and apartment. High-tech energy reflective glass patio doors and remotely controlled Velux windows in the roof, supported by an air exchange heating/air conditioning system, ensure maximum comfort all year round. There is also a ceramic wood burner that rotates 360 degrees to offer warmth wherever you decide to rest in the living space and terrace, if you are lucky enough to find yourself there outside of the super sunny summers.
The property has superfast direct-to-home fibre broadband and excellent mobile phone reception.
The property is a standalone house with its own entrance off the village street. The pool is situated off a small, quiet road adjacent to the apartment, accessible via a locked gate. Only the guests have the key. The pool is exclusively for guests. When the owners maintain the pool, they sometimes stop for a quick dip to cool down; obviously, this is when the pool is not needed by the guests.
The pool garden is exclusive to the apartment and offers several discrete private seating areas, all with great views. No neighbouring properties directly overlook the pool.
The apartment has a continuous floor surface from the front door to the end of the terrace with no steps or ridges to navigate. With all interior doors 83cm wide and a central floor drain in one of the en-suite bathrooms and an extendable shower hose, the apartment is welcoming to visitors in wheelchairs.
The village is very quiet as it has no through road. Visitors drive in and out by the same route. The 500-year-old bakery with traditional wood-fired ovens brings in locals from the surrounding area for morning croissants and fantastic bread. It also serves ice creams, coffee, cold drinks (including alcohol) and snacks. The village is a peaceful sanctuary even when it bustles into life. Particularly in the summer, offering weekly culinary fetes in the village square and classical concerts in the medieval church.
Montcabrier is set in beautiful countryside with an abundance of small market towns nearby, and is famous for its food and wine. Confit de canard, foie gras, goat's cheese, walnuts, prunes, melons, and peaches are all locally produced in abundance. Montcabrier hosts a marché des produits every Friday evening in the summer, for local producers to bring their fresh produce, BBQ, wine and often music and fairy lights with trestle tables set out in front of the 13th-century church make this a very popular event. There is also a marché aux puces and Festival de Montcabrier later in the summer. This is the local traditional dinner and dancing where matchmaking has helped generations of would-be romantics. Montcabrier hosts the wonderful "8 de Montcabrier" classical music festival (Check it out on YouTube), an outstanding event if you can be organised enough to get tickets. Motcabrier is on the Grande Randonnée G632, so it boasts fantastic walking opportunities along with mountain bike trails, horse riding and rock climbing. The great rivers of the Lot and Dordogne offer boat trips, canoeing, and there are many tributaries if you are keen on fishing. There is a free tennis court available for your use in the village, as well as a Pétanque pitch (boules provided). There are so many things to do for every ability; it is best to ask us, and we can help you plan a full itinerary, including shopping, eating, entertainment, and whatever activity you seek.
A travel cot and high chair are provided, and there is a play park for younger children in the village, including table tennis.
The Lot valley in this area, stretching from Cahors (40km to the East of Montcabrier), is the main area for the famous Cahors vineyards, which surround the village and wider area. It is all about the food, wine, markets and restaurants in this area of the Lot. Wine tasting is encouraged! The nearest market town is the beautiful medieval Puy-l'Evêque, 7km, although there is a market every day of the week in one village or another, a short drive from Montcabrier. Plenty of fantastic restaurants, again within a short drive, or for those happy to walk, with the nearest restaurant around 3km. There are large supermarkets in Fummel, 11km away, and Prayssac, 12km.
Following guest feedback, there is now a larger bed without a footboard, which is great for our taller guests over 6'. New knives and updated kitchenware too.

Accommodation was fabulous; spacious, extremely comfortable and well equipped. Lovely, setting in a village with great views; it was a pleasure to return here after a day out. We enjoyed exploring the local area, plenty to see and do and good places to eat.
The house is huge and the photos do not do it justice. It’s super comfortable and there’s a lovely view from the terrace. The pool is also large and clean. Plenty to do in the area. We loved our week there and would absolutely recommend!
Property perfect for our needs with excellent facilities both indoors and out. Everything had been thought of and we would happily recommend to others both for the property and the location
This was by far the best maintained rental we’ve stayed in - it was clean and well stocked with everything we needed. Gorgeous view, lovely and quiet village.
We had a fantastic week in Adam’s converted barn in Montcabrier. The property has been adapted to a very high spec, is spacious and well appointed. The terrace affords great views over the surrounding countryside and of the pool in the garden below. Montcabrier itself is a lovely bastide village with a church, medieval fortifications and, crucially, a boulangerie! We spent our week sightseeing (Chateau de Bonaguil a highlight), hiking (there are several great walks clearly marked starting from the village square), visiting vineyards (Ch. du Cedre is quality) and browsing markets (Prayssac on a Friday was the best). We mostly cooked for ourselves with the produce garnered from the local markets, but did treat ourselves to what proved to be a fantastic meal at Le Loup Blanc in St. Martin Le Redon (only 5 minutes away by car). All in all a lovely relaxing week in beautiful surroundings.
Excellent Property with stunning views in Montcabrier
WOW factor as soon as you walk into the house with stunning views; the pictures on the website do not do it justice. Furniture and fittings of a very high standard, exceptionally clean and very well equipped. Great balcony to sit outside to relax. Thoroughly enjoyed watching the swallows flying around the garden several times each day. Good sized pool. Quiet medieval bastide village with a good bakery across the road a bonus. Excellent prompt communication from Adam. The best property we have stayed in. We cannot recommend this property enough and we cannot wait to book it again!
The property is located in a small hilltop village so is very quiet and peaceful. It is extremely spacious and very well set up with excellent kitchen facilities and a wide range of equpiment. The two double rooms were cool and comfortable, both with en-suites. One room only had a curtain between the bedroom and en-suite though which our relatives found slightly awkward. The living area was extremely spacious and has amazing views through the full-length windows to the balcony and surrounding countryside. The balcony was a shady and relaxing place to spend time in. Walking out the front door and down the side lane to get to the pool was a little strange, but the village is so quiet that we never actually saw anyone else, and it is only half a minute's walk! The pool was extremely clean and well-maintained and was a great addition to our stay. The whole apartment is air-conditioned which added to the comfort. The owner (who was very helpful and quick to respond to any queries) has provided a massive selection of CDs which we played each night - a great range of music!
The area is beautiful. We found plenty to do including chateaux, walks, visits to bastide villages, and a 2 hour drive to Toulouse. The village itself has an excellent boulangerie and there are supermarkets a short drive away.
Overall, this was a gorgeous place to stay and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
The property is exactly as described; sleek and up to date inside yet the exterior blends in with the rest of the village. We were a party of two couples and the place is big enough that we never felt on top of one another. Our host promptly replied to inquiries and support was available nearby if required ( though it never was required). There is plenty to see and do within a 30 minute drive , so don’t hesitate to spend your vacation at this lovely gite.
This truly is an amazing property in an outstanding location. The property is spacious and welcoming, with everything you need and in some cases, don’t expect, for a holiday rental. Adam was extremely welcoming and answered any queries we had on arrival. His communication was excellent from point of booking. There is a small welcome package to get help you on your way, including a bottle of wine! The local E-Leclerc in Montayral is only a 15 minute drive, where you will be able to buy everything you need in regards to food and drink, even some goggles for your own private swimming pool. If you are looking for a relaxing holiday, in a stunning hilltop location, with vineyards aplenty, away from the hustle and bustle of a busy city or resort, this is the place to come. There is even a newly installed EV point approximately 100m from the property. Thanks Adam, we will be back!
A lovely apartment which has been converted from an old barn into a high luxury pad with Wow factor. Opening the door for the first time leads you into a wonderful open plan kitchen and living area which is all to a high spec. Add to that the amazing view from the full open glass windows and the terrace and you have the makings of a very relaxing and private place. The area itself is on the quiet side for families to be full entertained, if they want more than the great pool which is available, but there are some terrific walks right from the door. The local bakery in the square provide the cherry on the cake (literally) and of course the must do French breakfast with baguette and croissants. We also highly recommend a visit to Le Loup Blanc restaurant in Saint Martin Le Redon - you will not be dissapointed. Enjoy!
Absolutely perfect stay in this wonderful property with fantastic views. We loved everything about the house, which is well equipped with everything you need. House is very bright and is well suited to any type of weather with copious air conditioning and heating. We enjoyed great walks in the surrounding area. Excellent communication from host.
