Once the home of two of Sweden’s most famous artists, this beautifulhouse has been converted into a museum and sculpture garden.
This cliff-top art museum and its surroundingpark occupy a perch on Stockholm’s idyllic Lidingö Island. It was once the homeof Carl and Olga Milles, both highly respected artists within Sweden. Visit themuseum to explore their studios, the sculpture garden that surrounds the houseand see work by some of Sweden’s most famous artists.
Get to know the work of the Milleses bystarting your visit in the house they occupied during the 1910s and 1920s. Seethe Red Room, home to some of Carl Milles’ best-known sculptures, including Sunglitter, a mythical portrayal of anymph riding a dolphin. A marble sculpture by Donatello can be found alongsideGerman and Austrian wooden carvings in the Music Room. Visit the Monk Cell tosee the working quarters of Olga Milles.
Outside you’ll come across many ornatesculptures, pools and fountains spread throughout a picturesque terracedgarden. Wander through the upper terrace to find Carl Milles’ The Little Triton and The Dancing Girls. Surround yourself withalpine and Nordic flowers in an area Carl created for his wife and calledLittle Austria. Descend to the lower terrace for beautiful views of the centreof Stockholm. Sit by a statue depicting the story of Zeus, called Europe andthe Bull, as you admire the scenery.
Temporary and travelling exhibitions frequentthe museum and a full schedule can be found on the museum website. Past exhibitionshave featured works by some of the most famous painters in Europe, including Monetand Renoir.
Millesgården is located on Lidingö and can bereached by car in just 15 minutes from the city centre. Free parking isavailable upon arrival. A bus also services the museum. Millesgården is opendaily throughout summer but closes on Mondays during the off-season, as well asChristmas Eve and Christmas Day. An admission fee applies for entrance, andtours in English are offered for an additional fee.
