A guided river walk that takes in many of the marvels of the Dolphin Head forest-clad mountains – including two spectacular waterfalls.
Lying near the peak of the mist-shrouded Dolphin Head Mountains, are the natural charms of Mayfield Falls. Sparkling waterfalls, hidden caves and deep plunge pools – all wrapped in thick jungle greenery – make for exhilarating walks of discovery. With its abundant wildlife, including dazzling tropical birds and drifting colourful butterflies, it's no wonder that Mayfield Falls is now classed as the island's number one eco-tourism attraction.
Mayfield Falls claims to be home to the longest river walk in Jamaica, twisting and turning among the steep-sided ravine – so be prepared to spend much of the day here. The first challenge is an ascent up the steep hill, and then across a rickety rope-and-bamboo bridge. The route, however, is helpfully furnished with steps and guard-rails along the more tricky sections. And after that climb, the welcome sight of a reconstructed Arawak village greets you, where you can rest and refresh.
Much of the rest of the walk is along (and sometimes wading in) the tumbling clear waters of the stream that feeds the falls. Many sections of the river have gentle little falls and pools that make for perfect natural Jacuzzis. The water here gushes from natural springs further up, and so is, in effect the purest sparkling mineral water you're ever likely to find.
The larger of the two big falls is called 'the Washing Machine' and is some 3 metres high. Step under it, and you'll understand how it got its name. Higher up still, and the river guides can take you to some of the hidden mountain caves, where escaped slaves once hid. And if you're feeling really brave, you can be guided through a swim in one of the underwater caves.
Apart from the guided walk tours, Mayfield Falls offers plenty of opportunity for other activities. Camping, rock-climbing, cliff-jumping and mountain-hiking – all these beckon the adventurous. Or if you prefer, you could just sit, relaxing in your own private riverbed pool, and enjoy a little piece of Jamaican paradise.
