Join the bustle of Marseille’s VieuxPort, a historic harbour that is characterised by busy markets, ancientarchitecture and plentiful cafés. Find this Mediterranean port between the mazeof Old Town and the outcrop of Notre Dame de la Garde Basilica. Spend a dayexploring this dynamic city centre and use it to access some of the city’s mostpopular attractions.

Kick off the day with a delicious coffeealong the promenade. Along the north of the harbour, cafés are blessed withincredible views of the Notre Dame de la Garde, which sits atop an impressiveoutcrop to the south. This iconic symbol of the city and the incredible viewsfrom its perch can be accessed easily from the port via the Petit Train.

Visit some of the Vieux Port’s landmarksthat stand as monument to the city’s 2,600-year history. Two forts at theentrance to the port have stood guard since the 12th century and the age ofFrench Kings. Discover the history of Fort St. Jean, on the harbour’s northside, which today serves as an exhibition space for the Museum of European andMediterranean Civilisations (Musée des civilisations de l'Europe et de laMéditerranée, MuCEM).

Stop for a fresh lunch along thepromenade, with locally sourced produce available at a daily fish market.Explore the adjacent Panier, the city’s charming old town, and spot historicbuildings alongside food and trinket stands.

Use the port as a base for adventuresfurther afar. The nearby bus interchange provides access to the southernbeaches and parks while tourist boats depart daily to explore the limestonecliffs of the Calanques National Park. Otherwise, walk the Canabière, a robustthoroughfare next to the Port, which features art galleries, boutique shops andlavish theatres.

Get around Vieux Port, which is centralto Marseille, on foot. The area offers plenty of accommodation options andtourism offices to plan day trips around the city.
