You will find few finer skiing destinations in the Canadian Rockies than this one, which has something for everyone – novice or pro.

It started out in 1961 with a single tow rope pulling visitors up the slopes. Today Marmot Basin boasts over 85 runs, not to mention numerous high-speed chairlifts. Visit in the winter and get stuck into the resorts famous powder-snow runs.

Novices needn't worry. Marmot Basin welcomes those who have never skied in their lives. Take first-time lessons from expert skiers, or regain your confidence with advanced private lessons. Dedicated kids’ tuition is laid on, and there are all-day programmes too, meaning you can leave the kids while you go and enjoy the slopes. Special activities such as geo-caching are available too. Not having the right kit isn't an issue – call into the well-stocked rental shop, which also offers overnight storage.

Skiers and boarders can use express chairlifts to get to the top of runs quickly. There are eight of these that can transport up to 12,000 skiers in an hour. Take your pick from the Eagle Express Quad Chair, School House Triple Chair, Knob Chair and more. Slopes run the gamut from beginner to expert, and although some runs are more popular than others, it's always possible to find one that's quiet at off-peak times. Confident boarders can try out some stunts at the Rogers Terrain Park, with its various jibs, jumps, boxes and rails.

Buy a single day ski lift pass if you're breezing through. Otherwise, make savings with a multi-day option. Discounts are available for families. Ample bars and restaurants are dotted around the resort. Take your pick from the many hotels and lodges in Jasper if you plan to spend a few days at Marmot Basin. Souvenirs, such as toys and t-shirts, can be purchased at the Outer Limits shop.

Marmot Basin is 30 minutes south of Jasper. The resort is open from mid-November through to early May and is busiest during the winter. During this period, a shuttle runs between Jasper and Marmot Basin every day.
