The Mamanuca Islands (pronounced Ma-ma-nutha) is Fiji’s most popular group of islands, and it’s easy to see why. Adorned with pristine white beaches and surrounded by crystal-clear waters, these islands are considered to be the most picturesque in the Fiji archipelago.
The best way to explore the Mamanucas is by boat. A number of the islands are uninhabited but still easily reached by boat. This includes Monuriki, the island made famous by being chosen as the location for the film Cast Away. If you want to pretend to be stranded for the day, jump in a boat and set sail for one of these uninhabited islands. Or, if you’re dying to discover the coral reefs around the islands, go on a boat tour organised by your resort or charter a boat with a local guide to take you to the most impressive spots. There are also plenty of cruising options for day-trippers who want to see the sights in just one day.
For those who want to get closer to the underwater action, snorkelling and diving are excellent ways of taking in the marine life around the Mamanucas. Snorkelers can float above the reef and marvel at the kaleidoscope of colourful tropical fish, while divers can swim down and discover the beautiful coral reef below. Sign up for a snorkelling or diving course and prepare to be amazed by the subaquatic sights. There are courses for all levels of ability and experience, so anybody can have a go.
It’s easy to access the Mamanuca Islands from Fiji’s main island, Viti Levu, via boat or seaplane from Port Denarau, which in turn is only a short drive away from Fiji’s international airport in Nadi. The islands are dotted with a wide variety of different places to stay, ranging from luxury resorts to budget backpacker accommodation. So whether you’re travelling as a family, honeymooning or backpacking on your own, there is an island for everyone in the Mamanucas.
