Skyland was a nice place to stay, and the location is it's biggest attraction, high over the Shenandoah Valley on Skyline Drive. We stayed during peak foilage season so expected to pay a higher fee.
The accomodations in a room near the office were, overall, very good. Room was clean and neat and the view of the valley were great, especially since the sun decided to come out that afternoon. We were located very near the Dining Hall, which made getting meals very easy. Some of the other accomodations are quite a bit further from the Dining Hall and people would drive to eat there. The food was very good and the staff friendly.
There were a couple of trails on the property and the hike to Stoney Man Outlook was worth it (relatively easy 25-30 min hike). We didn't ride, but Skyland has stables and horseback riding available (can book online).
The only downside to our stay was that we could hear every noise in the adjoining room, even our neighbor's snoring, which kept us up. I can't say if this is different in other rooms (our booking called it a Deluxe room). Overall I would recommend Skyland if you're taking a drive on Skyline Drive.
