I will start with the positives, the communal toilets and bathrooms were clean and well maintained. It is on a tourist route and is cheap. The hotel had a restaurant which was convenient. Moving on to the more negative side of things, the room lacked any leg room, it felt like a shoe box. The sofa was right next to the sink, hardly had space to use it. Extension cables and wires were all over the place. Our whole purpose of staying at this place was to have a good night's sleep before we headed to Milford sound, but sleep was one thing we did not get. The walls were too thin we could hear what the neighbors were talking, everytime they turned the tap on we could hear the water flow, people were constantly opening and closing doors all through the night to use the washrooms. The bed was uncomfortable with springs hurting our backs. The lacthes on the window were broken so couldn't even have them open. I think the place has heaps of potential, it needs a total makeover.

The Lumsden Hotel is a VERY OLD STYLE hotel, with 10 very small rooms ( ours was about 2 mx5m or 7'x16'), common bathrooms (1 bath with a toilet & shower and the other with 2 toilet stalla and a shower stall). The beds (1 2xtwin + a twin) + a small cabinet for coffee stuff left no more than 2.5- 3 sqm (about 30 sqr ft) of free space - that also includes the door opening space ( at least 1 sqm or 11 sqft). Oh, most importantly, the rooms are above a bar with very loud music going well into the small hours of the night. And did I mention the double hung windows, one of which missed a latch to hold it open? In short, I would never never again stay in that hotel and highly recommend avoiding it if you have any other choice (inc. tent)!

Noisey place with Trucks passing all through the night as well as people walking up and down the hall way to use the shared toilets. Was worried about getting up in the night to use toilet myself as the door to the room jams and you had to almost slam it to get it to close again.Was looking forward to a feed of Blue cod and chips, unfortunately I couldnt eat it all as fish was very soggy. Ended up scrapping the batter off the fish to just eat the fish and sides. The staff were however very friendly.

Not long after we checked in, the ceiling started to leak on the bed. The staff was very friendly and was able to book us at another hotel across the street as they couldn't promise they could fix the leak that night or that it would stop. Staff was very apologetic and also offered a free dinner at their restaurant. Before we had to vacate the room, we were excited to stay there. Nice, historic looking building, room was very nice and clean and appeared to have been updated fairly recently. From sitting/laying on the bed for a few minutes it was comfortable, unfortunately we did not get to sleep on it.

I would call this place hostel not a hotel. When you go to hotel you expect a bit more. Windows couldn't stay open. Sheets had holes. Water pressure under the shower didn't allow for removing the shampoo from your hair. Everything looked old in this place. Even coffe tasted old. Playground opposite the building was nice.

Work in progress and being refurbished. This hotel dates back to 1880s and is slowly being improved. Service downstairs was good and had no issues with the meals. Bed was old and curtains probably need replacing. This cheap accommodation if it was at the standard of the Hilton, then expect to pay a lot more.

From a bygone era
It's had a bit of history... Lumsden is a bit of a backwater these days. Unfortunately although the beds were excellent and very comfortable, the room we were in smelled very strongly of cigarette smoke. Noise insulation between rooms in these old buildings was poor, and it's right on the main highway with trucks passing very early in the morning. Bathrooms are clean enough, but in need of minor repairs. However the staff are cheerful, and helpful. The meals are fine and the atmosphere in the dining room/bar downstairs was convivial - everybody there was enjoying it. Renovations were happening while we were there, and there is no doubt that things are improving for this grand old building.

Budget hotel with great staff & restaurant
I stayed at the Lumsden Hotel on the recommendation of another traveller, using it as a base to visit Milford Sound from. The staff are brilliant - could not have been more helpful. Grat food and a friendly bar witth a good selection of draft beers. I would definitely stay again

Lumsden - clean freindly and great value for money
It was affordable accommodate and very reasonable rates. As aid it was very clean and well serviced. The staff were very friendly and accommodating and the food was excellent - a good variety to chose from and at excellent value. The inability to find affordable accommodation as a base closer to Milford Sound makes the Lumsden Hotel a viable option if you need a bed to crash in to before an early morning 2 hr drive into Milford.

Great hotel in a very small town.
The hotel is about the only thing in town, but it was a great overnight stay on the way back from Milford Sound. The room was comfortable and clean, and there was a bar a restaurant right at the hotel. A lot of road noise, but otherwise very unexpectedly nice.
