Our stay at the Reef was lovely. The location was great for us, and the view of the water from our room was a real treat. The staff were so kind and welcoming. I had breakfast in my room one of the mornings and it was exactly what I wanted and needed. We got an upgrade when we arrived - our room was HUGE. During the day, I didn’t find the room very quiet though. There was a lot of sound transfer from the lobby and from the pool area. I was worried at how this would impact the evening - but by night the room was quiet and there was no sound transfer at all. This wasn’t a negative - but just something to be aware of in case your expectations are silence. The pool and spa were both lovely - great after a long day hiking. We appreciated that laundry available for guest use. On a road trip across the north island, this was something we were looking for in a hotel - so we were grateful it was available. Overall, we had a great stay and would have no hesitations in recommending the Reef or staying here again.

Beautiful rooms. Geothermal pool and soaking tub were very nice. Quiet hotel with quick access to lake which has a great walking or biking trail.

Lovely host throughout our stay. Really nice pool and surrounding area with 2 barbecues. Lovely lake views from our room. The walkway out the back gate to the lake was a bonus. Great place for couples or families. Highly recommend.

Have stayed multiple times before and loved it. Prob won't stay again. Felt like I was a problem from arrival to departure. Front desk is never manned, when it is the woman is abrupt to the point of rudeness. Something has changed here. Room & pool area felt tired and the sofa grubby/ dusty. There are so many other options in Taupo for less $, so will try somewhere else for my next stay.

Sorry to hear you did not enjoy your stay. It is unreasonable to expect front desk to be manned continually - we have a phone that you pick up and someone is right there to assist. It would have been good if you could have talked to the staff before you left re your other concerns and you would have found out that the sofas are up for renewal and the pool is going to be painted again. We are always trying to maintain our standards. Any constructive opinions are also invited - thank you from the Team@ ReefResort

We stayed here one night. I knew it was small, but think that it was this small! It is very narrow and is on the lake, but you are likely not able to see the lake from your room. The place looks like it was recently renovated and the kitchen was well stocked and you could cook in your room if you wanted. The pool/spa area is nice but very small and you are surrounded by buildings on the two sides. So just need to be aware…calling it a ‘resort’ is definitely a stretch…but nice hotel to stay in. The owners are very nice.

Excellent staff . Room was well stocked and clean. Pool and spa were literally outside door (thermal heated). AC had leak but staff advised of this and were very helpful. We chose to still use room and it was easy to limit to no leak or very small while keeping room cooled.

It is clean well located room had plenty of space albeit no opening window - only down side is the parking - if don’t get one out the front there is not much room in the other parks very very tight

We had the most amazing stay! The room was clean and fresh and staff were wonderful. We had to make a last minute change to our booking and the team at The Reef Resort were accommodating, understanding and made things happen without any fuss! It is getting harder and harder to find good service in NZ, but the staff were super friendly and awesome to talk to! We usually stay at another provider when we go to Taupo - but not anymore! We will definitely be changing to the Reef Resort from now on!

Great pools but not a luxury experience
On site pools are great for relaxing especially if you have a ground-floor apartment and can step straight out to the pools. Parking spaces not large enough for some of the large vehicles for customers, especially those with trailers. Fire alarm briefly went off twice early in the morning before I had got up. Seemed it must have been a test but there was no warning. Luckily I had just woken up but it still wasn't a pleasant way to start the day. Door to pools locked in the evening before the advertised closing time for the pools. Inconvenient as that was the easy back in after eating dinner out and walking back along the waterfront. Owners did not wear masks even though stay during the peak of the Omicron wave. Didn't inspire confidence so we tried to minimise interactions.

Thank you for your review. Parking space sizes have not changed but size of vehicles certainly have - we only have one space per room which is stated in confirmation emails. Fire alarm was not a test - a guest actually set it off but it was got to straight away - sorry for the inconvienience and also that you had to walk a few more steps to get into the building after dinner out. We felt that the “luxury” component of the studio room that the hotel indicated on the site when booking is highly overstated. Given the cost of the room, the 4.7 rating and the 9.2 reviews plus the noise levels from the rooms above and the activity at the pool directly outside our room, we were expecting so much more. The 1 ply toilet paper, shower over the bath and the ground floor room with limited views when we had specifically booked for lakeside views and instead were given poolside views, left us feeling extremely disappointed. More suited to a family than a professional couple looking for a romantic getaway.

Thank you - through your 3rd party website booking you did actually book a poolside unit for the one night. The description tells you that there is a shower/tub combination. We have no problem if you contact us directly to find out what room type you have booked and our own website probably has better descriptions than others.

Loved it, views are stunning, hosts are amazing. Easy access to the lake. Amazing price. Will definitely return. Stayed up the road the night before and it cannot compare to the comfort at The Reef Resort. Hired some bikes for $5 and hour and had a great time exploring.

Nice heated pool, but rooms are lacking maintenance, tape over things and requiring a cosmetic upgrade. Have stayed at this place 3 times however this time was a let down, seems the maintenance and upgrade works have let the property and rooms down.

Thank you for your review - the only tape in your room(and all the rooms) was over a switch on the wall that no longer works for heating. All rooms have air cons. Would have been nice if you could have conveyed your concerns at the time re mainenance /upgrades - then we would know what you were talking about and may have been able to address them.
