Traverse the largest lake in England and relish the relaxed atmosphere at this base equipped with rental equipment and activities for the family.

Brockhole, the Lake District Visitor Centre is a fun family site with picturesque gardens and thrilling activities. On the northeastern shore of Windermere, England’s largest lake, the base has boats available to rent alongside bikes and pony rides. Bring your kids to the centre for days of diversion with games, a playground and nature trails.

Embark on the Beatrix Potter Trail to learn about the wildlife that inspired the 20th-century writer in her children’s books about animals. Try the Discovery Trail to find out about the region’s history and vegetation. Many other trails mix walks with boat rides in Windermere.

Stroll through the designer gardens to see camellias, magnolias and rhododendrons. Enjoy views of the lake and the Langdale Pikes from the terraces. Play mini golf with the kids on the course with innovative features having a Lake District theme.

Bring the kids to Bigland Hall Equestrian for a pony ride. Safety hats and riding boots are provided. Relax with a picnic while children play in the free adventure playground, which is full of swings, zip wires and scramble nets.

Explore the Treetop Nets, which consist of a trail of giant trampolines, tunnels and slides. The Treetop Trek has 35 challenges for kids, including aerial obstacles and zip lines. Rent a bike to cycle through the scenic terrain around the lake.

The visitor centre contains exhibits on local themes including aerial photographs of the region and lake history. Try Cumbrian cuisine from the café with views of Windermere. Purchase souvenirs, maps and guidebooks from the gift shop. Find perfume, jewellery and cuddly toys for kids.

Hours vary depending on the time of year, but the centre is generally open daily from morning until late afternoon. Enter the centre and café for free and pay for individual attractions.

Brockhole, the Lake District Visitor Centre stands on the northeastern side of Windermere Lake. Follow brown signs for the visitor centre on your way from Ambleside, 2 miles (3 kilometre) north. Pay to park your car in the parking lot.
