Barbara is fantastic. She has a lovely old moors house in a fantastic part of the world. If you are after peace and quiet this is the place. If you enjoy bush walks then there are plenty in the area. The views are fabulous from the roof top terrace. I would highly recommend a stay here. Thanks Barbara.

The Enchanted Valley
I'm just eating a big bowl of Ferreirola soup made with English ingredients-- pepper, sweet potato, tomato and garlic simmered gently until the peppers turn soft and the added hot paprika permeates the whole -- and it's good, but it doesn't taste the same as the soup I make when we stay at Casa Barbara. The little four ring gas cooker always takes a hammering when we're there, but for those who don't want to cook on holiday there's a multitude of places nearby to eat out. Our favourite is the little bar in Mecinilla when a few glasses of red wine with accompanying tapas makes cooking at home redundant.
How to describe Casa Barbara? Let me put it this way: staying in the magical valley of La Taha is going to be a great experience wherever you book, but to wake under a ceiling of cleft chestnut and olive, to sit on the balcony and watch the sun rise over La Corona with the valley beneath still shrouded in shadow, to feel five hundred years of history all around you, adds a depth to the holiday that nowhere fancier or less authentic could possibly match. If I had to sum it up in a phrase I'd call it 'not too fancy, just right', like the valley and the people and the bars themselves. Is it six or seven times we've been back? Eight? Each time we lug our bags up the stairs it's as if we've never been away and the outside world fades into insignificance. Then when you get back home you can close your eyes and remember the light from the setting sun laying along the hillside over the valley, remember frantically cooking tapas for our perfect landlady, remember the smiles and the welcoming 'Hola' from each person you pass in the village, remember the white villages shining among the olives and holm oaks, and the clonk of goat bells sounding through the intense silence.
Eight, it's eight times we've been back. Next year, God willing, we'll make it nine.
Great away from it all location in charming white village. Bar and Restauarnts easy 1km walk in next village. Superb walking from from door.

Comfortable well equipped house in wonderful location
There really is nothing missing in this lovely house. It's a wonderful spot from which to explore the Alpujarras with a walk across the valley starting just outside the front door, and so many other beautiful villages within walking distance. We were so pleased to be free from the more intensive tourism in the bigger towns and couldn't have wanted anything more.

Charming old village house in the Alpujarra
We stayed in Casa Barbara in August 2018 and we really enjoyed our time there. It is a nice old house, well done up with personality and an interesting design. It was our first time in the Alpujarra so that was a fantastic discovery for us too.
The walls and ceilings of the house are very thick so that made it quite cool in August. It is quite comfortable for two people and it has a great covered terrace area with a lovely view where we spent most of our time. The roof terrace was also available but it is a tad hot in the summer. Great for star gazing though! The kitchen was fine, adequately equipped for basic cooking and there is a wide variety of books to choose from when you want a break from walking. The wifi signal was sufficiently good to let us access whatever we wanted on the internet but the mobile phone signal was a bit less reliable.
The town Ferreirola is very pretty with friendly people , indeed the people are friendly in all the surrounding towns too. We actually coincided with the annual fiestas there which were fun and probably the only time when there is a bit of loud noise! It’s quiet but not always since you’re in a town so you can hear people in the nearby houses sometimes from the terrace.
There are great walks nearby with lots of information in the house on routes etc. There are a few good restaurants in the next town 15 mins walk away and I would recommend a head lamp for the way back. The main biggish town in the area, Pitres, is about 10 minutes drive away and it has a good supermarket, bakery and the bookshop sells newspapers too.
Of course we took a trip to Granada half way through our stay to visit the Alhambra by day and night. Make sure you do the night visit! I had forgotten what an amazing place it is.
All in all, it was a great holiday and we would highly recommend Casa Barbara as a base to experience The magical Alpujarra from.
One word of advice> Watch out for the low beams!

Barbara, thank you very much for all. We hope to see you again.

Perfect place for relaxing and walking
Ferreirola is a small village surrounded by mountains - the village is very quiet and the only thing we heard were the cats and bells from the sheeps. The apartment is good - the kitchen contains everything needed - there is a lot of inspirations for walking tours which can start in Ferreirola. We can recommend this place if you are searching for relaxing and walking/trekking - most of the walking tours have a height difference of 200 to 450 meters

Beautiful home in a very peaceful village.
Firstly some tips: Make sure you stock up before you get to the house since you need to drive to the nearest shop. You also cannot drive directly to the house so will need to leave your car in the plaza or just outside the village. The village was really pretty and there are some amazing walks. The house was perfect. It had a beautiful terrace and it stayed cool during some hot nights. Lots of lovely features. Not an area for people wanting to party but it's a really friendly, pretty village and probably the nicest in the area. Barbara has left a tonne of information about all the walks and the best places to collect delicious drinking water. She also told me about a lovely natural swimming spot. There are so many markets to visit and interesting things going on in this very special part of Spain.

A traditional village house
We loved it. Homely and spacious (well for the two of us anyway) with it's own roof terrace adjoining the owner's (but separated by a high wall) , and a lovely covered terrace adjoining the living room, cooler in the day. The house is in the lovely 'white' village of Fereirolla, with great views from both terraces over the surrounding countryside which has wonderful walks, one beginning quite literally from right outside the front door. It was so peaceful, more than we would have expected in a village location. We were able to walk to an excellent French vegetarian restaurant, and a more cheap and cheerful pizzeria ( both around 15 minutes) for dinner in the evenings, and it's a short car ride to Pitres which has a very good supermarket and bakery. Barbara is a very nice host and couldn't have been more helpful. What can I say...we loved it!

Traditional house in an old Moorish village.
Casa Barbara is a traditional Moorish house in a small village at the end of the road. There is great walking all around and good access to Mulhacen (bus from Capiliera to 8,800' and good track to the summit). The supermarket and bakery in Pitres are good, and eating your evening meal on the balcony every evening a rare treat (especially if you come from Scotland!!). The history of the area is fascinating and we found lots of endemic plants. Barbara's warm welcome, knowledge and love of the area will see us back again!

Thanks for everything, Barbara - we will be back soon!

Perfect Christmas and New Year
We had the best week. Wall to wall sunshine for the whole 7 days. A most welcome escape from a cold, wet UK.
Every thing is just so easy at Casa Barbara. The moment we enter we feel 'at home' with a feeling of calmness and peace we find hard to describe. Whatever it is, it keeps us coming back. March can't come quick enough. But hey...enough from me. Go give it a try for yourselves. I KNOW you won't be disappointed :)

Alpujarran idyll
This, our third holiday at Casa Barbara - a traditional Moorish house situated in the tiny "Pueblos Blancos" of Ferreirola, tucked away on the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada - as before, did not disappoint.
The warmest of welcomes from Barbara our incredibly helpful and friendly host, the well equipped and spotless kitchen, the pretty balcony overlooking the mountains, the comfy bed, the only sounds the buzzing of lazy bees and darting swifts, you can feel your muscles start to unwind as soon as you arrive.
It's perfect if you appreciate peace and tranquility, walking in the mountains, breathtaking scenery and soaking up the atmosphere of rural Spain.
There are no bars or restaurants in Ferreirola, but a short walk to Mecina Fondales (the next group of villages along) and you'll find a few places to eat, including an excellent vegetarian restaurant. Go a little further afield to some of the other villages in La Taha and you'll find many more restaurants. However, if you decide to "eat in", you will have the "best table in the house" on your very own balcony.
If you feel like enjoying nothing more than a cool drink and a good book, Barbara has thoughtfully provided well stocked bookshelves which include guides to the vast network of walks and maps of the surrounding area, and there's a rooftop terrace with stunning views, perfect for relaxing, but be careful of the low beam as you make your way up!
If you enjoy nightlife, coach tours, beaches or theme parks then this is probably not for you, here you must make your own entertainment. For me, the worst thing about staying at Casa Barbara is going home, it gets that bit harder every time. We'll definitely be returning next year.

Perfect holiday
Right from the start of the booking process Barbara was friendly and helpful. Every stage went smoothly and she provided comprehensive details on the location of the property, facilities and how to get there.
On arrival we found a warm and welcoming traditional village house equipped with everything we needed. There is a great selection of books on the bookshelves, perfect for curling up after a long days walking. The property was clean and the bed was very comfortable, kitchen well equipped. It was unseasonably warm when we stayed so we did not have to use the wood burner, but there was even a small basket of lenya if we had needed to. There is a covered terrace at the front of the property which we loved to eat breakfast on and also a fantastic roof terrace with views across the valley. We spent a lot of time on the roof terrace, reading or just enjoying the sun and listening to the gentle sounds of the village. To say we felt relaxed is an understatement!
We holiday in the Alpujarras because we enjoy walking and there are so many walks that start and finish in the village. There is a copy of Holiday Walks in the Alpujarra in the house and we found that to be helpful when we first came.
We enjoyed meals at both Cueva de Mora Luna (great pizza and Carlos is a star!) and L'Atelier (vegetarian, freshly cooked & delicious and a very warm welcome) in Mecina Fondales, an easy walk from the property Tip: head torches are very useful for the walk home. We also had a beer at Bar Aljibe but did not eat there.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and we can't wait to return and would heartily recommend this property.

Didn't want to go home!
We've just returned from an absolutely fab 2 weeks in Ferreirola, staying at Casa Barbara. We'd previously visited here whilst holidaying in Capileira earlier in the year....and that's where our love affair started!
We thought it impossible to match, let alone better the outstanding views and atmosphere of Capileira....but found ourselves drawn back to Ferreirola a further 3 times during our 7 day stay! Both saying (almost at the same time) 'We have to stay here when we come back'! In our opinion more dramatic views with perfect tranquillity!
How lucky we were to find 'Casa Barbara'...and of course Barbara herself. A lovely warm welcome and the cosiest of houses. Full of charm, character and history! The kitchen perfectly adequate if you prefer to 'dine in', but with so many inexpensive restaurants serving good food within La Taha and surrounding areas, we opted not to. You have the choice of not 1, but 3 areas to dine (dining area, covered balcony and roof terrace - with views to die for!). Bathroom roomy with lots of hot water and a living/dining area with a super and varied array of books! You can start many of the walks right from the door, or just enjoy the house relaxing on that amazing roof terrace. You really do see something different every time you're up there. I could waffle on forever with a range of superlatives, however, will simply but LOUDLY say 'Just go and sample 'Casa Barbara' and the beauty of Ferreirola for yourselves....just not when we want to be there though' ha!!!!
Meant to say: Barbara is as obtrusive or unobtrusive as you wish. Sadly, she wasn't there much at all when we were there, but always left a number where she could be contacted in case o
