Help the injured animals on their way to recovery and feed the birds and rabbits in this charming wildlife sanctuary.

La Paz Serpentarium is an innovative animal shelter with a range of rare and endangered species from the region. With a focus on reptiles and amphibians, the site’s enclosures display snakes, turtles and spiders, among myriad other creatures. Fund the care of one of the animals here to help with its rehabilitation and the preservation of the species.

Wander past the site’s enclosures and see some of the more than 150 species of reptiles, birds and other creatures that have been rescued. The park has a mission to raise awareness about the importance of preserving these animals. Check out the slow-moving crocodiles, lizards and iguanas.

In the aviary exhibit snap photos of colorful birds perched on branches. Buy a cup of bird food and see how the birds and large rabbits gravitate toward you. Some of the animals are injured and will remain in their enclosure until recovery, when they may be released again into the wild.

One of the main attractions in this small zoo is the pond, where you’ll find many turtles swimming in the water and relaxing on the rocks.

Reach the glass enclosures for a closer look at the snakes. Imagine the fearsome rattlesnakes crawling through their natural habitat in the wilderness of Baja California.

Look through the selection of souvenirs for sale in the gift shop near the entrance. The store sells jewelry, stuffed toy animals and other items.

Note that this zoo opens Tuesday through Sunday from morning until afternoon. A small fee is charged at the door, with discounts for kids.

La Paz Serpentarium is in the Barrio Manglito area in the western corner of La Paz. Drive southwest from the Zona Comercial district for about 10 minutes to get here.

See some of the adjacent sights, including the Whale Shark BalandraMX, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Guadalupe and San Francisco Javier Church.
