Ranfurly
9.0 out of 10, Wonderful, (19 reviews)
"Fantastically comfortable bed, couldn't wait to get into it each of the 3 nights we stayed. Nicely appointed and very clean accommodation but in this day and age the least expectation would be a small microwave and a sink in the room. Found plates, cups and cutlery but not ideal having to wash up in the bathroom and Ranfurly doesn't have many places to eat out at night."

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Kokonga?
The best area to stay in Kokonga is generally close to the Otago Central Rail Trail, particularly around the towns of Oturehua or Wedderburn, as these offer the most convenient access to local amenities and the trail itself.

For those planning to cycle or walk the Otago Central Rail Trail, staying in Oturehua is ideal. This small settlement is centrally located on the trail, making it a great base for exploring different sections. You'll find a historic railway station, a general store, and the famous Gilchrist's Store, which offers a glimpse into the region's past. Accommodation here often caters specifically to trail users, providing secure bike storage and packed lunches.

Couples looking for a peaceful escape with easy access to the trail might prefer Wedderburn. This quiet village is also directly on the Otago Central Rail Trail and is known for its serene high-country landscape. It's a great spot to relax after a day of exploring, with a few local pubs and eateries offering a warm welcome.

The best time to visit Kokonga is during the warmer months, from late spring to early autumn (November to April), to fully enjoy the outdoor activities and scenery.

Couples looking for an active yet relaxing getaway will appreciate this period. The warmer weather allows for leisurely bike rides along the trail, stopping at small towns and vineyards for tastings. The clear skies often make for excellent stargazing opportunities in the evenings.

For those interested in fishing, the rivers and streams around Kokonga are typically at their best during these months, offering good conditions for trout fishing.
