At the heart of Glenprosen, one of the renowned ‘Glens of Angus’, lies the Balnaboth Estate on the edge of the Cairngorms National Park, 6,000 acres of peaceful and secluded land surrounding 16th-century Balnaboth House. With six other holiday cottages sharing the site, each offer a unique and magical holiday retreat; indeed the creator of Peter Pan himself (Sir James Barrie) was born in nearby Kirriemuir and holidayed here.
These cottages were once occupied by shepherds, gardeners and staff of the Ogilvy family when this was a traditional Victorian sporting estate. Red squirrels play in the trees, otters frequent the burns, and deer graze all around. Because of the varied scenery, from beech woods to forest, pasture to heather moor, mountain streams to river pools, the area enjoys a spectacular range of wildlife, including species largely extinct elsewhere in Britain, such as black game and ptarmigan.
Magnificent walking, bird-watching, mountain biking and, in season, cross-country skiing abound on the estate and, further afield, downhill skiing at Glenshee, 35 miles away. Fishing is available on a 5-mile stretch of the River Prosen, and there are 20 golf courses within an hours’ drive. Enjoy the seclusion of this beautiful glen, peaceful, relaxing, scenic, yet just a few minutes’ drive from bustling market towns and busy fishing harbours which hug the Angus coastline, as well as from the city of Dundee which offers many attractions for all the family. The exciting Dundee Contemporary Arts is a stunningly-designed centre which incorporates galleries, a print studio and two art-cinema screens, while the Mills Observatory is Britain’s only full-time public observatory with a resident astronomer. Good road, rail and air access to Angus provide easy access from all parts of the UK or international destinations. Shop, pub and restaurant 9 miles.

The scenery is stunning, the wildlife amazing, the location is idyllic so long as you don't mind having no phone signal, no Internet and having to travel a few miles to the nearest amenities. The cottage is cosy and well equipped but would benefit from some repair and a good spring clean. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay there and would certainly return. I would highly recommend taking some bird food/nuts with you.

Burnmouth is a charming cottage in a stunning location.
Burnmouth is a charming cottage in a stunning location. Peace and quiet is assured as there is no mobile signal or broadband. The house is clean and fairly well equipped. The beds are comfy. The cottage has one or two architectural quirks which add to its character. It is located in Glen Prosen surrounded by heather clad hills, forests and farmland. It is 10 miles from the nearest town, Kirriemuir, so it's a good idea to take plenty of supplies. The surrounding area has a lot of interesting places to visit. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and definitely return.

This was a peaceful restive break in a super cottage that provided all we needed for the week. There was no phone signal so solitude was guaranteed. Plenty of outstanding scenery to enjoy with a wealth of wildlife to see and enjoy. Would recommend to anyone who wants to get away from it all.
