Karridale Travel Guide

Tourist Guide
Karridale showing general coastal views and a beach
Ancient fossils in an underground cave, wine-tasting tours, a forest and a lighthouse provide plenty of excitement when you stay in this Western Australian town.

Karridale is a small town surrounded by beautiful scenery. It is close to some popular Margaret River attractions. Tour award-winning wineries, visit one of the tallest lighthouses in Australia and find your way out of a forest maze.

Timber miller Maurice Coleman Davies established Karridale in the late 19th century. The surrounding forests of karri trees supported several timber mills in the area. The original town was largely destroyed by the 1961 Western Australian bushfires, and a newer town was built close to the site of the original. Although there isn't a lot to see and do within the town, it is a convenient place to stay if you are sightseeing in the region.

Within a few minutes of the town is the Boranup Forest Maze. Work your way to the centre and then try to get back out. Afterwards, go on a drive through Boranup Karri Forest.

More spectacular scenery awaits at the nearby Mammoth Cave where ancient fossils are still embedded in the limestone walls. These fossils include the jawbone of a giant marsupial species. Explore the underground beauty of the cave's chambers on a self-guided tour.

Augusta is another great daytrip destination. This pretty coastal town is about 14 kilometres (8.7 miles) from Karridale. Head to the top of Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse, one of Australia’s tallest lighthouses. Relax on the sands of Flinders Bay and discover insights into the area's past when you view the exhibitions at Augusta Historical Museum.

During your time in Karridale, pay a visit to local wineries. Taste and learn about the produce at wineries including Hamelin Bay Wines and Blackwood Meadery.

Karridale is approximately 301 kilometres (187 miles) from Perth. After flying into the capital of Western Australia, make the rest of the journey to the Margaret River region by car, bus or coach. Rent a car to explore the area at your own pace.
