The tallest building in Penang is the place to head for stunning views of the island as well as some retail therapy and great entertainment.

Officially known as Kompleks Tun Abdul Razak, the dodecagonal skyscraper KOMTAR is the island’s tallest building. Named after the country’s second prime minister, when the tower was completed in 1986, it was the tallest building anywhere in Southeast Asia. One of Penang’s first major retail and leisure destinations, today it’s a popular shopping spot.

One of its major draws of course is its observation deck. Located on the 60th floor of the 232-metre-tall building, from this point you can enjoy views over the rest of the city and beyond. Coin-operated telescopes are available if you want to see the distant hills up close.

As well as serving as the main transport centre for the city and housing government offices, the building’s 65 floors incorporate shops and boutiques, many different restaurants and great spots for all kinds of entertainment.

In the four-storey podium alongside KOMTAR, you’ll find the renowned ICT Digital Mall, a glittering treasure chest overflowing with gadgets, from the latest laptops to powerful mobile phones, and much more besides. Across the rest of the building, you’ll find shops where you can find everything from high fashion to fun souvenirs.

If you want to grab a bite to eat, check out the KOMTAR Walk, a 155-metre-long open-air walkway where you’ll find something to suit your palette. Head for the sushi bars, or maybe try some delicious noodles in one of the Chinese noodle bars. There are also Malaysian eateries where you can sample some laska and nasi kandar, or flavoured steamed rice.

Situated in the heart of Georgetown, KOMTAR is open each and every day. You’ll have to pay a small fee to go up to the observation deck, which opens between Monday and Friday. Tickets are available at the ground floor information desk. It is easy to reach KOMTAR on public transport, as the building is a key terminus for bus routes across the city.
