Set off on a voyage down the cliff face at Horseshoe Falls to observe and admire the magnificent waterfall from behind the waters on this fascinating journey. When you reach the bottom, gaze up from the observation decks at the foot.
Descend the almost 50 metres in an elevator that takes you right through a bedrock cliff, as almost 3,000 cubic metres of water gushes past you and into the Niagara Gorge every second. Be prepared by putting on your waterproof poncho before getting out of the lift, or you’ll be drenched in moments!
The elevator journey down takes you through a range of tunnels leading to viewing portals nestled behind the waterfall itself. Head to the western side of Horseshoe Falls and step out onto the large platform and enjoy the view. There are barricades here to ensure you’ll be kept safe, but if the winds that blow across the falls are fierce, you’ll get soaked unless you’re properly covered. Waterproof clothing is essential in winter, and a good idea even in the sunniest conditions. But in spite of the spray, or perhaps because of it, this is a truly exhilarating experience you won’t forget.
You’ll need to spend at least half an hour, though as the tour is not guided, you can stay for as long as you wish.
Come in the spring and the water levels may be dramatically higher thanks to melting snow. The volume pouring over the falls depends on the level at Lake Erie, 35 kilometres southward and rushing north to Lake Ontario and then out to the Atlantic.
You can reach the start of the Journey Behind The Falls from Niagara Parks’ Table Rock Welcome Centre where you’ll also find shops and restaurants. It is open every day throughout the year, depending on conditions. The welcome centre is located less than two kilometres to the south of Rainbow Bridge around the Niagara Parkway. If you’re driving, paid parking is available.
