  • Originally built as a saloon around 1888, the Mail Pouch Building takes its name from the charming tobacco sign which graces its western wall. Restored in 1994, the sign wall is a colorful reminder of the days when sign painters toured the country covering barns and buildings with their handiwork. Today, the building houses a unique gift and craft shop called The Crafty Peddler. Home of the 6½ ft. Cigar Store Indian carved by a local artist, this craft shop also has folk art, baskets, pottery, jewelry, home and garden décor, and Christmas creations year round. Painted around 1895, the sign itself is made up of two parts: the lower portion, advertising Mail Pouch Tobacco, processed by Bloch Bros. of Wheeling, West Virginia. The upper portion is an advertisement for Augustus B. Cummings, who was a local businessman and possibly one of the inventors of the first plow. This portion is called a privilege panel, and was traditionally given to the building’s owner or occupant as compensation for allowing the tobacco company to paint their sign on the building.

This hotel is okay. The staff was nice and courteous. The room was very clean and welcoming. The cons where there was no breakfast and no mention that the breakfast was not available. Additionally the shower in the room would not produce hot water; even after 10 minutes of running. We will most likely not stay there again.

Staff great. Rust on handicap handles in bathroom needs to be buffs out. Grout lines in the accessibe bathroom needs to be redone. Floor tiles uneven and looks like water pools there so doesnt look nice. Room clean. Bed comfortable. Breakfast good. Deborah (i believe is her name) friendly and welcoming every morning at breakfast. Would stay again. Pleased.

The entire property was clean and well kept. The lobby was very nice and perfect to sit and talk. Breakfast was ok but the location was great. The little downtown area is a 10 minute walk.

Everyone/everything was great, especially Heather. However the breakfast was really bad. This place offers a great price but I would pay more to stay some where with better breakfast. I would also come back and stay just for Heather. She was great with my mom and aunt during a time of grieving.

Close to Downtown

This hotel/motel was clean and comfortable. Some rooms had balconies and some had outside access. Ours had neither. Front desk workers were friendly. Breakfast was ok, but had limited choices. It was quiet for being close to a main road. If you want to be close to Jonesborough, and not pay a fortune, this is the place.
