Hike a breathtaking trail through a gorge to reach these falls, which cascade from one of Kakadu National Park's most spectacular cliffs.

Jim Jim Falls is a postcard-perfect cascade that feeds the Jim Jim Gorge in Kakadu National Park. Whether you embark on a guided or self-driven adventure, the Jim Jim Gorge Track is a must for any Kakadu experience.

The hike to the waterfall is around a half-mile (900 metres), but crosses difficult and rocky terrain. As you hop between rocks, admire the creek below and look out for crocodiles lazing on the banks. Ask your guide about the fascinating flora that colours the bushland palette.

Once at the falls, photograph its striking red cliff face. Those visiting in the early dry season can enjoy the cascading water and cool mist. Later in the season, however, this stream can dry up.

Under the falls, there are two pools to refresh yourself. Take the kids to the beach pool, where shallow waters reveal colourful fish darting between the rocks. Otherwise, dive into the deeper plunge pool.

If you have time, challenge yourself on the Barrk Malam Walk. This steep trail leads up to the plateau above Jim Jim Falls, offering commanding views of the countryside. Allow around 5 hours for this walk. Pack hiking shoes and plenty of water.

Turn a day trip to Jim Jim Falls into a slow-paced adventure with an overnight stay at the Garnamarr Campground. This cheap campground is open during the dry season and provides showers, toilets and drinking water.

The Jim Jim area is accessible only to four-wheel drive vehicles in the dry season, between July and October. Reach it via the Kakadu Highway towards Cooinda and take the turnoff at Jim Jim Falls Road.

Park at the base of the walking trail and walk to the nearby viewing area for sweeping views of the gorge and surrounding plateau. Allow about 50 minutes for walking along the Jim Jim Gorge Track.

Jim Jim Falls is located in southern Kakadu National Park. Get there from Jabiru on a tour bus or rented four-wheel drive vehicle.
