Affordable Relaxing Getaway! Beautiful 3 bedroom cottage on 18 acres!
Now with high-speed internet thanks to our newly installed satellite (June 2020 and upgraded 2023).
Super CLEAN. Cleaning lady is amazing and long time family friend. We still leave 24 hours between guests.
Come enjoy the peace and quiet of the mountains!
Whiteface Mountain and Santa's Workshop are just 10 miles from house. Jay covered bridge and swim holes are within walking distance.
OUR HOME: Our renovated grandfather's home is located on 18 acres on a peaceful back road in Jay, NY. Relax on the deck overlooking the 180 degree views of the Adirondack High Peaks. Walk our trails in the woods behind our house or play in the yard (i.e., baseball and frisbee or sledding down the hill in the winter). Roast marshmallows over the fire in our fire pit in the woods (strict fire safety rules apply & no fires in drought seasons).
PRICE DETAILS (see more descriptions of costs/fees below): $195 - 199 per night - varies slightly per VRBO automated system.
Cleaning fee shown as $100, but $50 is a refundable trash deposit, making sure that guests remove trash and recycling. Sorry there is no curb-side trash pick-up in this beautiful country location.
*Holiday weekends have three night minimum.
Additional VRBO service fee and taxes apply.
Note: If you have a dog, ask us if you can bring the dog. We charge an extra $100 pet fee for the extra deep cleaning required after your stay. We like to keep a low allergen home and don't often accept pets. We like to discourage it, but talk with the owner to see if your one well-behaved dog will be okay. We have rules: no dogs on beds or fleece blankets, no dogs left alone in house unless in a crate, wipe down dogs after being outside (bring old towels or use our older towels), and no dogs on furniture. Clean up after dogs when they are going to the bathroom outside. We have carpet, so please be super careful.
Longer rentals: Ask about discounts for rentals over 7 days. Or for my repeat customers!
MORE HOUSE DETAILS: Come relax and recharge with the views, that Adirondack smell, and the peace/quiet.
Front porch and back deck with plenty of outdoor furniture, small & large charcoal grills, lounge chairs. Front log porch is great for a cup of coffee as the sun is rising over the mountain.
INTERNET: Yes, we have it! Finally, after years of looking for a rural solution. We installed a Satellite June 24, 2020. Then, we super charged it in 2023 with changing to HughesNet. Satellite can be affected by bad weather, though. You will have high-speed internet connection throughout the house. Password will be at the house.
BEDROOMS: 1. Master bedroom with plush-deep queen mattress, 2. two twins in 2nd bedroom, 3. double/full size bed in 3rd bedroom.
COMFORTS include new log porch facing morning sun, with a rain chain that will soothe even if it is a rainy day. Full kitchen with all the amenities, new sofa and power recliner, realistic electric fireplace, powerful Toyotomi heater (new in 11/2019), DVD/VCR player, lots of movies and games, CD/radio doc, dishwasher and Electrolux front loading washer and dryer (new in 8/2019).
Open floor plan between kitchen, dining room, and living room. Dining room table fits at least 6 people.
BABY-PROOFED house with supplies: plug covers, cabinet locks, Graco travel crib (with bassinet attachment for babies and fits toddlers up to 35 inches tall), high chair, and toddler life-jacket. Kid-friendly house with kids movies, games, toys, sled, beach toys, baseball bats, balls, frisbees and more.
TRAILS & ACTIVITIES Hike, snow shoe or cross-country ski on our trails behind house. Jay Mountain wilderness trails are close-by (<5 minute drive).
Walking distance to: world-renowned Ausable River for fly-fishing, historic Jay covered bridge, park/playground, swim hole by waterfalls at covered bridge, Jay gazebo where they hold concerts in the park in the summer, and JEMS Theater. (Note: East Branch of the Ausable River is within walking distance, and the West Branch of the Ausable River is a very short drive. Lots of fishing info under TV at house or ask owner).
Only 10 minutes to Wilmington for more swimming at the public beach (town beach at Lake Everest), Whiteface Memorial Highway, Santa's Workshop, and world-class skiing at Whiteface - featuring the largest vertical drop in the Northeast.
Cross-country ski centers (Cascade/ADK and Mount Van Hoevenberg Complex) are a 20 minute drive away, and on our own property. Snow shoeing too.
Lake Placid (home of the 1932 and 1980 Olympics) is less than 25 minutes away.
Drive in the other direction to see the Ausable Chasm (10 minutes). Check out Ferries.com for area ferries across Lake Champlain.
Foodies will be satisfied: there are lots of new family-run farms in area with cheese, milk, eggs, chicken, beef, sausage, bacon, etc. Keene farmer's market is on Sundays, starting mid-June. I will send you a list of farms and farmer's markets.
WHAT OUR PREVIOUS VACATIONERS HAVE SAID: 'This place is so easy to live in.' 'Splendid home! Wonderful views and tranquility. House is well- equipped and we appreciate all your efforts in providing useful information.' 'Thank you for the wonderful secluded cottage!!!' 'It is so good to be back at your home in the ADKs, and to find so many new amenities, especially the couch.' 'We were in such desperate need of R&R and this house gave us so much peace.' 'The breeze on the porch and lawn is absolutely pacifying and replenishing.'
FINALLY, I want to be transparent with costs/fees. Here they are again: -$195-199 per night (VRBO automated variability). -$50 refundable trash fee, which will be returned to you when we see that you have removed all trash and recycling at the end of your stay. Sorry for no curbside pickup in the wilderness! -$50 cleaning fee: for use of our linens and for the extra time the cleaning lady needs to do your laundry. I can wave that fee if you are bringing all your own linens, as that is a lot less time for my cleaning lady. But please make sure to leave the house in good-clean condition, as that cleaning fee goes towards her cleaning time too. -Sorry for the VRBO service fee, as I cannot remove that. -If you are thinking about bringing a dog, then send me an inquiry and talk with me first. We have to be very careful with allowing dogs to help keep our home low allergen and low scent. (We like to use a scent-free and environmental products to clean.) There is a $100 pet fee if your pet is allowed to come for the extra deep cleaning that the cleaning lady will have to do.
-Damage Protection: Homeaway offers a great low cost property damage protection. You pay only $59 dollars for $1500 worth of protection.
I also like to give discounts on additional nights added to a rental last minute (like when you realize you just can't leave). Of course these are per availability.
Discounts for repeat renters and longer renters too (discount for 7+ days and bigger discount for 28+ days)!
When you book, I provide so much info on house and tourist info of area. I am here to help make your trip safe and enjoyable.
Thank you!

Delightful cottage with a lot of history. Very beautiful property especially with the light snowfall we experienced.
Our hosts were always available to assist us with our needs.
My friend and I very much enjoyed our stay.
The setting was stunning and we loved the open spaces, outdoor activity equipment offered and fire circle. House is very cozy with great deck. We would love to make it back someday.
We had a wonderful stay! The house totally met our expectations. Definitely felt like a home away home! Plenty of space to relax and enjoy each others company.
Annual holiday trip with the family, great location was very convenient to the Whiteface area, Vermont ferry terminal, Lake Placid, Tupper Lake and all the amazing shops and restaurants in the area. Lots of time spent exploring the trails on the property and enjoying the snow with the kiddos in the back yard.
The house and property were great, and despite the weather not holding up, the location is near enough to a bunch of neat places, particularly on the Ausable River.
We love Karen's place! It's clean, comfortable and quiet, with beautiful mountain views on three sides. We love the proximity to the East branch of the Au Sable River and hiking in the Wilmington and Keene Valley areas. This year, with a toddler among us, we enjoyed visiting nearby farms. Karen is a responsive and responsible host. We're most appreciative.
LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION! WOW, what and incredible property. So many things to do in the area during all seasons. The house was clean, warm and inviting. Couldn’t ask for much more. We look forward to coming back!
My stay was everything I hoped it would be: quiet, lovely views, the joy of sunrise, sunset, even the super moon right outside my door, and Whiteface in the background. The house was very comfortable and very well equipped for an enjoyable two week stay.
Spot was perfect for me and my adult children as a base for hiking the various trails in the Adirondacks plus visit to Lake Placid. Creature comforts of being at home (including internet access and cell service) and property was as listed. Easy communication and support from the host; would use again for future visit to the area.
We came for a 4 day weekend for my wifes birthday. The place was perfectly located with magnificent views of the Adirondack mountains. The 3 bedrooms were perfect for our family and they had everything we needed for a nice relaxing stay. We were within half an hour of Ausable Chasm, Cascade Mountain and High Falls Gorge, all of which were amazing! We also loved the trails out back of the property. We highly recommended and cant wait to come back.
Property was furnished as described and very comfortable. Our stay was brief so we didn’t take advantage of the grill or fire pit. Moon Valley Farm and Ausable Brewing were fun stops. We hiked Mt Marcy Saturday. Not for the timid!
Karen and David offer a cozy, well-equipped house with many thoughtful amenities for both comfort and fun. Examples: guides to local farms and markets; fire pit; window fan; laundry facilities; sweet little walking trail through wild raspberry bushes.
Views on all sides are amazing. We love the location - quiet and remote-feeling, but with easy access to high peaks, Whiteface recreation area and Lake Placid. Many places to hike and swim.
Karen is communicative and helpful throughout the process of booking, arrival etc.
We love staying here and hope to return soon!
We love staying at Karen and David's place!
The house is clean and comfortably furnished; the kitchen is well-equipped. We love eating dinner on the deck. The location is perfect for those who like to be a bit off the beaten track, while still having easy access to a wide range of hikes, swimming spots and places to canoe or kayak.
There are stunning views of the Jay and Wilmington ranges from every window in the house.
Hosts are quick to communicate, and provide lots of helpful information about household equipment, local groceries and farmers' markets, etc.
Our whole family finds this a profoundly relaxing place to be, and a great launching spot for our Adirondack adventures.
This cottage was perfect for me and my two friends, though it seems like it'd be ideal for families too with the three decent sized bedrooms, full kitchen and large living area. I was a little skeptical of the small-seeming stove at first, but it got the whole place nice and toasty in no time! I really enjoyed the private location... something I didn't see in this area for a similar price range. The winter nights were peaceful, quiet, and cozy, and combined with the warmth of the stove lent to a very hygge atmosphere. The bed I stayed in was firm and quite comfortable, especially after a day of climbing whiteface. It was hard to leave and I would have stayed longer if I could!
We loved our stay for the 2024 total eclipse! The house is on a hill with beautiful mountains all around, and it is very quiet - it's like you have the mountains to yourself. The house itself is one of the most comfortable my family of 4 has rented and not cramped like many rentals. The living room is huge with plenty of seats, there is room around the table to easily seat 6, and the kitchen is big enough for multiple cooks. Even the bedrooms are big - not just big enough to fit a bed, but instead have plenty of room for bags, dressers, big closets, etc. For the price this is a bargain! You will not be disappointed staying here to hike, ski, or bike in the region. And to top it off, the hosts are excellent!
My husband and I wanted to explore the Adirondack region, our first trip there, and this home was a good base to drive to Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, and Whiteface Mountain. Nice hiking trails around. Covered bridge in Jay was good site for photos. The home is on a quiet street with nice back porch to have meals, read a book, or just ponder. The kitchen was amply supplied, though we took advantage of trying local restaurants for dinners. The Hungry Trout was our favorite. Although the house is small, there was plenty of room of us. The owners provided excellent and detailed information about the area, sites to see, places to shop, and driving directions. We were concerned about the home having no air conditioning, but it was very pleasant weather and ac was never needed. The windows have good screens and we used these to capture breezes. Glad we visited the area.
location was awesome. Very quiet, There were dead bugs all over the place and we woke up to many flies and wasps flying around. We pretty much killed flies, wasps, everyday all day!!! I realize that you are in Nature, but that is a bit much for all of those bugs everywhere. Knats came in through screen and were all over the bathroom. For as much as we paid for the house, we should not have had to taken the trash or worried about using sheets and towels and getting charged for them. Please do not charge me extra as This was too expensive to begin with for 3 nights. The bugs were out of control inside the house.
Enjoyed spending time on the covered porch. There was a lot of rain (3 inches in one day) so we were unable to take advantage of the fire pit and trails. Because of the heavy rains, we were able to take awesome pics of covered bridge with rushing water as well as rushing water at other locations on day 3. Many good restaurant’s in area (Hungary Trout and R F McDougall’s). Short drive to beautiful Ausable is a must. Lake Placid is close by. Home was comfortable. We chose to use our own towels, linens, etc. The driveway is hidden so we took owners tip to honk when backing onto road. We also rolled our car windows down to listen for oncoming vehicles. The only change I would suggest is brighter lighting in the home. Our stay was perfect, quiet, and enjoyable.
