Getting Around:

Guests will need to make sure they have their own vehicle. Summer months are fine with a small car but four wheel drive is a must in the winter!

Other Things to Note:

What to bring with you!- You're coming to a wilderness area to vacation and if you plan your vacation well you will have a positive experience. In the summertime May and through the middle of June can tend to be cooler early morning and toward the evening hours. Make sure to bring a jacket and long pants you can change into when needed. Bring a pair of tie up shoes to protect your feet. Shoes likes flip flops or sandals will not protect your feet when you are out exploring. Layering your clothing is a good idea and then if your too warm you can take off clothing as needed. At least this way when departing your cabin early morning to go site seeing you will have what you need with you. July and August are pretty warm and you should still bring a light jacket. The rest of the year you will want to bring heavier jackets and long underwear, snow suits etc. You will need to bring your private toiletries like bar soap and shampoo as we do not provide this for you. Cabins are equipped with everything else you should need except food of course. Snow tires and four-wheel-drive are recommended for traveling in Eastern Idaho during the winter. Road conditions can change quickly, and even well-traveled highways are occasionally closed by blizzards or high winds. Before setting out, check the Transportation Department's website or call 511 for an automated, up-to-the-minute status of all thoroughfares. Wise motorists will also carry emergency gear (shovel, snack bars, water, blankets) in their vehicles to be ready for any contingency. Coming Snowmobiling? A reminder to anyone traveling back country areas whether skiing, snowmobiling or hiking: Remember the time of year, exercising all back country cautions. Take necessary equipment and survival gear when venturing into the back country. If you have a GPS and cell phone, be sure to take them with you, but do not rely on them entirely for a safe rescue if you find yourself in trouble or stranded. Cell phones should be kept close to your body & turned off to keep the battery full, so it's not searching for a signal & running the battery down. Avalanche Transceivers and equipment, knowing what the avalanche conditions are, and knowing skills to save lives are a must for everyone entering back country riding or traveling. Plan ahead. Make sure you know the area you are going into before heading into it. If you find yourself in trouble, stop, take a look around you, and do not go any further. The further you go the more complicated and dangerous it is to get yourself to safety, also making rescue efforts more difficult and dangerous. Make mental notes in relation to any physical features or landmarks that would assist in your rescue. Make a plan, stick to your plan, narrow the riding area, & most of all...let someone know WHERE you are planning to go!

A great stay near the Buffalo River.

Warm and cozy, even on a late September rainy day. Just feet from a trail that you can walk for miles. The river and meadows are just a short distance, full of wildlife, deer, bear and moose although all we saw were cows.

Impressive Experience

This cabin is definitely something special. It is overwhelmingly equiped, everything except the TV worked fine and it lies at a quiet place. We enjoyed our stay. The trip to Madison Junction takes about an hour. So take this driving time in your consideration.

This was our second stay at Buffalo River Retreat, and we would stay here again. A short 30-minute drive to West Yellowstone and Yellowstone NP, this was the perfect "off the beaten path" location for our stay. The kitchen had everything we needed to prepare meals at the cabin and the beds were comfortable after a long day of exploring all that Yellowstone has to offer.

Awesome stay

Upon arriving to the cabin the property was not clean however once the property owner was notified the cleanliness was too priority and the cleaning service did an excellent job cleaning the place so we can enter the place is very cozy with a large front and back deck to relax and has a real wilderness feel to the place during the visit my family went and explored through Yellowstone this place was not far from the park with easy access overall the place is definitely recommended and I hope to visit again

Such a cute little cabin in great location!

The pictures don't do this cabin justice. We ended up spending more time indoors than we planned (due to snowfall in Island park that we weren't planning on) and this cabin was a great homebase:)

Perfect trip

This cabin is in a great location close to a lot of activities but it is out in the trees enough to feel like you have a private mountain cabin. It was spacious enough for our family of 6 (kids ranging from 7-14) and included everything we needed for an easy trip (stocked kitchen, bathroom, bedding) All we needed was food, clothes, and toiletries. Cabin was clean and ready for our arrival and when I had a question about our arrival I got a quick reply to my text. Great first experience using Vrbo. Thanks!

Beds weren't great, location was

We stayed here for 6 nights with my family of 5. The good: 1. It is close to Yellowstone, Island Park Reservoir, Henry's Lake, and Hebgen Lake. 2. Cabin has lots of books, DVDs, and the kitchen is well stocked. 3. Quiet subdivision with some trees for privacy and walking distance to the Buffalo River. The bad: 1. Mattresses are old and we all had trouble sleeping. Many mornings we woke up stiff and sore. Even my high school son. We did everything we could to make the beds tolerable adding blankets, pillows, etc. Nothing helped. 2. The key pad and front door locks are a nightmare. It took several minutes each day to lock/unlock the doors. The keys just fall out of the lockbox and one day they fell under the porch. That was fun climbing under there to retrieve them. PLEASE get a better lockbox and upgrade the door locks. 3. The house is pretty old and not made very well. When someone is on the second floor it is very loud and squeaky. 4. There is too much furniture for the space. The couch has recliners but you can't put them out without moving the coffee table, which then takes up most of the living space. 5. The bathroom was not clean. There was orange mold in the shower. Overall, a good place to stay, just not sure we would go back because of the lack of sleep.

Ok but needs better cleaning and updating

Cute cabin. When I booked this it said there was a dishwasher and washer. As time went on they both were taken off as apparently broken. The day before we were advised of a "possible" water contamination. Upon checking into it more they didn't feel our cabin was an issue but we should use caution with drinking and teeth brushing. We used bottled water for drinking and brushing. According to the guest book, someone checked out the day we arrived. There was a good amount of dust in the cabin. In the upstairs where our teenage grandchildren stayed there was enough dust to see your finger swipes. With COVID still happening and the new variant getting worse, it was a bit unsettling. With the dishwasher not working I made sure to hand wash any dishes we used prior to using them. As far as the cabin itself went, we loved the area and layout of the cabin. However given we are still in pandemic mode, I would have liked clean bedspreads and pillows. When we departed all we were asked to do was strip the sheets. I'm "guessing" that means the bed spreads would not be washed??? The many decorative pillows on the beds did not look clean. Other than that we loved our stay! Hopefully these suggestions will help with future stays.

Buffalo River R&R!

Our stay was perfect! From the location to the cabin itself- from the contents of the kitchen to the decor- we found ourselves a "home away from home!" My only comment is that prior to arrival I had asked about the grill and was told that it was a gas grill and propane would be provided. Upon arrival, we found that the grill was charcoal. Just want you to know so you have the right info!

Out of the Hustle

This is a great alternative to West Yellowstone. If you like to be away from the hustle and bustle of a gateway city to Yellowstone this is a great cabin. About 30 minutes from the west entrance to Yellowstone for us it was PERFECT! The cabin was wonderful. Just about anything we needed was there. It's super quiet, just the way I like it. We ate at Connie's one night and Lake Side Lodge a couple nights, both were good. My friend and I would both highly recommend this property.

Very nice Island Park stay

Great location and convenient for Island Park activities. Some OHV traffic close by, but not intrusive. Very happy with the cabin, only complaints are that the washer/dryer was out of order and the dishwasher didn’t work properly (perhaps hard water issues?). These are advertised for the property which is why I dropped the rating a bit.
