Venture into the civic heart of Quitowith a visit to Independence Square (Plaza de la Independencia, also known asPlaza Grande). This iconic square is a popular meeting place and is surroundedby such landmarks as the Metropolitan Cathedral of Quito, Carondelet Palace(the presidential palace), the Municipal Palace and the Archbishop’s Palace.

This square’s history is as long asQuito’s itself, being the site of one of the city’s first water sources. Fromas early as the 16th century, locals have gathered here to get watersupplies and watch bullfights. Visit today and admire its modern centrepiece: amonument to the Royal Audience of Quito, who began calls for independence fromthe Spanish colony in 1809.

Walk along the square’s tree-lined pathsand enjoy views of surrounding colonial façades. The square’s gardens arecharmingly decorated with flowerbed displays and water features. Take a seat on a shaded bench and spend some time enjoying a snack, people-watching or pickingout which street stalls you’ll browse.

Sit on the curved stone benches oppositethe Cathedral of Quito and take in its magnificent exterior. This buildingdates back to the mid-16th century, making it one of the oldestcathedrals in South America. With this history comes many stories, including onelegend that states that the rooster that sits atop the cathedral, Gallo de laCatedral, once came to life to attack a drunken man that insulted him.

Explore the streets surrounding thesquare to find a number of Ecuadorian restaurants, cafés and curious craftstores. The nearby Information Centre in the Municipal Palace is a great placeto learn about the area’s history and even runs some informative tours.

Find Independence Square in the centreof Quito Old Town. The colonial landmarks around the square are usually open tothe public but may charge admission. Get to the square using Quito’s trolleybus networkor, if you are driving, use paid parking on adjacent streets.
