Take a trip to the campus of Glasgow University and explore the 8,000-strong collection of art and artefacts at the Hunterian Museum.

The Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery is named after the anatomist Dr William Hunter, whose personal collection makes up the majority of the exhibits. It is Scotland's oldest public museum and one of the most impressive University collections in the World.

Housed across five buildings in the grounds of Glasgow University, the exhibition encompasses ancient historical treasures, priceless paintings and intriguing exhibits tracing the development of modern science and medicine.

The main building houses an amazing assortment of ancient wonders. Highlights include a beautifully preserved mummy from Ancient Egypt, a map of the 17th-century world prepared for the Chinese Emperor and the fossil of a 50-million-year-old shark discovered by a local resident walking his dog.

Take some time to discover the history of the Antonine Wall, which demarcated the border between Scotland and England in the AD 140s. A permanent exhibition is dedicated to the Roman invasions of Scotland and displays elaborate waymarkers from this important Scottish landmark.

Step into the private world of one of Glasgow's most famous architects when you visit the Mackintosh House, a painstaking reconstruction of the home of Charles Mackintosh using furniture and interiors recovered from his household.

Wander around the art gallery, which boasts the largest permanent collections of works by the renowned painter James McNeill Whistler. See the skeleton of a real dire wolf in the Zoology Museum and study Hunter’s own research into the lymphatic system when you take a look around the Anatomy Collection.

The Hunterian is located on campus at the University, making it easy to find. Make sure you check opening hours on the website before you leave, as these vary between the different buildings. If you’re driving, simply follow the University signs from the city centre. You can park free of charge on the campus at weekends. Alternatively, there are a number of buses which stop within a few minutes of the entrance.
