Poas Volcano Lodge

Poas Volcano Lodge

10/10 Excellent
"The lodge is beautiful, and an impressive piece of architecture. Staff are super friendly and helpful, and food is very good. There's a pool table and game room downstairs in the lodge, which we definitely took advantage of with the weather turned against us. The grounds are gorgeous and well-maintained. Note that when you turn off the main road you drive past quite odiferous cow sheds and through a pasture...just have faith and keep driving to the lodge. The actual rooms appear to be the old bunkhouse, so they're a bit odd; the rooms are functional for the most part, but ceilings are quite low and the bathroom is sort of an elongated closet, so they have a weird feel. The walls are thin, but the other guests are quiet, so it all works out fine. WiFi is good in the rooms. No AC, but the elevation is high enough that we didn't need it. Good launching point to visit Poas Volcano early in the morning. We would stay again."

La Quinta Sarapiqui Lodge

La Quinta Sarapiqui Lodge

"Location & Property: The hotel is located about 15 minutes from Puerto Viejo, on the road towards La Fortuna. The property is very pleasant and well maintained, with the rooms spread across different cabins connected by paths. The setting feels peaceful and surrounded by nature, making it a nice place to relax and enjoy the jungle. Room: Our room was clean and comfortable, although quite basic. The bed was comfortable and the room had air conditioning, but there was no TV or fridge. The bathroom was clean and functional, with a shower and basic toiletries. Breakfast: Breakfast was fairly standard, with coffee, juices, and a selection of hot and cold dishes. Nothing particularly special, but it was more than enough to get the day started. Facilities & Surroundings: There is a nice swimming pool, although we didn't get to use it because of the heavy rain during our stay. The property also has several paths where you can walk around and enjoy the surrounding jungle. There is even a pond with alligators. We went to have a look, although unfortunately we weren't lucky enough to see any. All things considered, this is a nice place to stay if you're exploring the area or simply looking for a comfortable stopover. It would also be a good option when travelling between Tortuguero and La Fortuna."

"The grounds here were very pretty- several trails where you could bird watch, and the view from the infinity pool was very nice. The staff were helpful and friendly. The only things we found to lower my rating slightly were that the rooms (depending on where you're assigned) can be a little way down a path and there didn't seem to be a golf cart/similar vehicle to help you with your bags. I had a group of teenagers, so hauling their own luggage wasn't a problem except that it was raining the night we stayed so everyone got wet moving luggage to our rooms. Also, you drive to the end of the road to register (and this is where you unload your luggage to take to your rooms), but then you've got to park your car in a lot closer to the main entrance, so there is extra walking involved if you had mobility issues. I know the beauty of the place is that it's surrounded by nature, but in one of our rooms we found 3 centipede/millipede type creatures (2 on the floor and 1 on the wall), and one other insect that weren't there when we first got into the room, but later likely came in via the crack under the exterior door. This freaked my daughters out as we found them right before bedtime, so if you were insect averse you might consider a location in a less outdoorsy place."

"We spent a wonderful five nights here in a family room and it was a truly immersive rainforest experience we will never forget. You are deep in the forest and an abundance of wildlife is all around-including some in your room or on your terrace so you need to be comfortable with that. We saw many toucans, hummingbirds, howler monkeys, an anteater, possums, and many jungle insects right from our room and immediately outside it, The howler monkeys wake you at 5am every day with deafening calls which is really special- just don’t expect a lie- in! Facilities are basic and a bit run down and be prepared to be wet and muddy all the time, particularly if you do the resort’s trails into the jungle,- quite overgrown and not well marked unlike some of the larger rainforest attractions, so lots of care needed and not for the faint hearted. The staff is amazing and really made our stay magical, They were all so knowledgeable and helpful and really went out of their way to chat and make sure we had everything we needed, particularly Sergio and Suri. Breakfast and dinner were lovely buffets with a huge amount of choice of both local and international foods. I would only note two things for improvement about our stay- firstly would be to change the bed linen after 2-3 days for guests staying longer like us as the constant humidity and dirt makes it needed. Secondly to tell guests at check in how to radio security at night if required as no staff are on site at night."

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Horquetas?
The best area to stay in Horquetas is near the town centre for convenience, or along the main roads leading to nature reserves for a more secluded experience. For travellers who appreciate convenience and easy access to local amenities, staying within or very close to Horquetas town centre is ideal. This area provides straightforward access to local eateries, small shops, and the main bus routes. You'll find a more local feel here, with everyday life happening around you.Couples looking for a peaceful and nature-focused retreat might prefer accommodations located slightly outside the town, closer to the entrance of a nature reserve or along the main routes like Route 32. This offers a more private setting, often with properties that boast direct access to trails or views of the rainforest.
When is the best time to go to Horquetas?
The best time to go to Horquetas is during the dry season, which runs from December to April. This period sees less rainfall, making it ideal for exploring the natural beauty of the region. You'll find the trails in better condition for hiking and wildlife spotting, and the rivers are typically calmer for activities like rafting. This is especially good for couples or families who want to make the most of outdoor adventures without the disruption of heavy downpours. While the dry season is popular, the shoulder months of May, June, and November can also be a good option for those seeking a balance. You'll experience some rain, but it's often in shorter bursts, and the landscapes are incredibly lush. Plus, there are generally fewer visitors, meaning a more peaceful experience at attractions. This can be a great option for those who appreciate a quieter trip and are prepared for occasional rain.
